Goose with foot puncture, not an emergency

An update on Jessica's foot... I don't see any redness or swelling & she is walking normally so I think she's going to be just fine. Actually, she is currently out preening in the rain puddles with her flock, lol. Thank you for the help Wyorp Rock, it meant a lot to me!

Goose with foot puncture, not an emergency

Here is a photo of the puncture...sorry, it is very hard to make out. Between the outside & middle toe, near the juncture of the two. At that lavender colored area at that toe juncture, the puncture is just below & starts where a shadow is cast...it's a very thin black stripe, almost exactly...

Goose with foot puncture, not an emergency

Thank you for the advice Wyorp Rock. Yes, the wound is affecting the webbing only. She was limping after the thorn removal yesterday but this morning she is walking normally. I'm sure it must hurt her to some degree but she seems OK for now. I will clean the wound with iodine every day for...

Goose with foot puncture, not an emergency

I just got home from town & found my 1 year old African goose, Jessica, with a black locust thorn embedded in her foot. Thankfully it was just through the webbing well clear of the joints & bones. I syringed the puncture with water, totally soaked the wound with a lot of providone iodine. To...

Are the Broody Hen's Eggs going to hatch?

I went to Cackle Hatchery today & picked up 8 chicks for Teacup. When I got home I set the box o' chicks ON TOP OF Teacup's broody house for 10 minutes (I stayed with them). The box was positioned just above/a few inches from her head & I know she could hear them chirping from inside the...

Are the Broody Hen's Eggs going to hatch?

That is very good to know...I haven't come across that information before. Maybe I'll see some chicks after all. I'll keep this thread updated as the situation progresses in hopes of helping others facing a similar situation.

Are the Broody Hen's Eggs going to hatch?

Thank you so much Chicken Canoe & Jessejeanne for the good information. Your help means a lot to me! I'm just watching the situation & waiting at the moment. No pips or bad smells as of this morning. Teacup is still getting off the nest for a very brief time & then straight back on. I KNOW...

Are the Broody Hen's Eggs going to hatch?

I sat on a bench this morning & waited for Teacup to leave her broody coop. I saw her walk down the coop ramp & out to her water on the ground. I walked up to the coop & opened the nesting box & she must have "quantum leaped" because when I looked inside she was already getting back on her...

Are the Broody Hen's Eggs going to hatch?

I just checked Teacup's nest. The eggs were still warm but had no pips, sounds, movements & no smell. I had about 1 minute of observation before she was back at her nest... she is fast. I'll probably be picking up an incubator & a candler at Cackle Hatchery tomorrow when I go to look at...

Are the Broody Hen's Eggs going to hatch?

Hello Chicken Canoe, I noticed she went missing either on Jan 15 or Jan 16. That puts the estimated hatch date at yesterday or today. Thanks for the feedback on the hands off approach. Teacup is flighty & I don't want to upset her unnecessarily. Moving her & her eggs into the brooding...

Are the Broody Hen's Eggs going to hatch?

Thank you for your help Birdinhand. Yep, the date when she started to sit is questionable but that's my best estimate... I know she was missing on either Jan 15th or 16th but it could have been earlier. Then I find myself wondering if the cold temperatures have effected the start of life in...

Are the Broody Hen's Eggs going to hatch?

Just for a laugh, here is a photo of where she decided was a good place to lay eggs.... under an abandoned mobile home on sheet metal bent at a 45 degree slope. FYI, I do have perfectly good nesting boxes in the coop for goodness sake!

Are the Broody Hen's Eggs going to hatch?

I am looking for some guidance, this is my first time hatching anything & I'm thinking most of these eggs are not viable... The story: My little, free range Spitzhauben Pullet, Teacup, went missing when we had that bitterly cold weather around January 15, 2024. Fast forward 2 weeks & I found...

    What causes B vitamin Deficiency?

I am looking for information about B vitamin deficiencies... I have 1 hen, Matilda, with a B vitamin deficiency. I thought the hen had broken her toe at Christmas time because it was strangely bent & she was limping. In February she suddenly got a lot worse - she was mobile in the morning...
