We also have young embden who are pulling and eating feathers from each other. Could this be related to nutrition? We've raised several geese before but never saw this before.
We have 2 embden goslings also about a month old. I have watched them pull and eat feathers from each other. Could this be nutrient related. We've raised geese before and have never seen this before.
My 1 yr old rooster has begun prancing when he walks. It began as raising his right leg high when he walked. He now does both and looks like one of the dancers in the line at Radio City Music Hall. I'd give everyone a chuckle for the new year except the video is too large. I'll try to get...
We have pekins. Initially we had 1 hen and 3 drakes. They were close to killing her; so, we've kept her with 1 drake and closed the other guys into our pen. we ordered 7 pekin female ducklings. They are about 1/2 grown and have been kept in the pen with the 2 drakes. Yesterday, one little girl...
So how do you tell male from female. We have some chasing and some head waving when they roost at night. We've never seen any breeding take place. But everyone hangs together: 4 Pekin ducks, 2 layers with their guy, Clyve (Therooster who has his own FB page) and the 5 guineas.
We have 5 guineas. They free range during the day and return to roost in the barn rafters. It's 5:37am right now. A loud crashing had us dashing to pull on jeans and boots, grab a gun and flashlight, and run downstairs (we live in an apt over the barn). The only thing that was out of order was 1...
I adore my guineas. They are loud a few times a day; but, I love to listen to their soft cooing. They are the silliest birds; but, I'm getting more keets this year. They are free range so we've never seen eggs. The cutest thing was they were raised with a banty Cochin rooster. He was sure that...
We've been keeping at least 2 drakes penned for a week now. Daisy (guess we are all Donald Duck fans) is happier and her neck is healing; although they tend to hang out near the penned guys. Ordering another dozen hens. We do love our kids.
I need to see if there is a guinea thread. Raised some...
Thank you so much. It's all great advice. These are the first to make it this old. We had a bobcat that just defied any type of control. Only one who made it was a little mallard and she got lonely and flew away.
Would you happen to know how we should proceed about her eggs. She began laying in the same place each day and is up to 17 eggs. Still not sitting. Should we try to hatch them or toss them away?
Thank you Miss Lydia. It's 3:1 guys:gal. We chase them off of her and I'm planning on ordering several more hens (if that's the correct term). Or, it's time to try duck for dinner. Guess we'll go buy a pen or chase them into their stall.
I have used aprons on my layers but now my male Perkins chase the one girl around the property and are very rough with her. How do I protect the back of her neck where they hold her? Especially something that won't stay wet.
We have been suffering predation. One bird a day at all different times. Turns out to be a bobcat. Not easy to trap or shoot. We free range so we just ordered electric netting which will arrive in a few days. We are just hoping that the cat doesn't learn that it can jump over the wire long...
