Ascites Relief. Did I do it right?

Sadly, she never rallied back from this bout. I found her dead in the run this morning. So sad this has to happen.

    Precious..the blind Barred Rock hen

Yeah..just need to remember to check their feet more often. I replaced the bandages tonight, along with a good cleaning and fresh application of neosporin. The wound looked ok, and appears to be healing.

Ascites Relief. Did I do it right?

So, my hen has now gone almost six weeks since the last draining. I guess as long as the interval doesn’t get shorter, I’ll keep draining as necessary. In between draining, she is her normal happy, bossy self. She is now the queen of the pecking order, since the previous hen holding that...

    Precious..the blind Barred Rock hen

I’m wondering if this may have been caused by a cut from a broken shell. Precious has a habit of breaking eggs in the nest. She steps on them, probably due to the sight issues. It doesn’t happen all the time, but maybe once a week, or every couple of weeks. Of course, there might also be...

    Precious..the blind Barred Rock hen

Thanks. She tolerated it well. Will be interesting to see how it heals now. This is the biggest one I have ever had to deal with.

    Precious..the blind Barred Rock hen

Well, surgery is done, and I hope I got it all. The scab part came off with a little persuasion, and I removed anything else that looked infected. I packed it with plenty of neosporin, and a gauze pad, followed by vet wrap to keep it tight and clean. Hopefully it will heal ok. Here is what I...

    Precious..the blind Barred Rock hen

Summer has been slipping by, and I haven’t been checking the hens feet. Last night, I had them all out for supervised time out in the yard, and remembered I had not done the feet check in a long while. Well, I found that Precious has bumblefoot! Ugh…. It is a rather large scab, about the size...

Waiting out illness instead of culling...thoughts?

Just one last update on this thread. After my last post, Gwyneth continued to do well, and didn’t exhibit the issues I reported anymore. However, she did start having issues with one of her legs or hip. In late June, she started collapsing on the ground, as she couldn’t bear weight on her...

    Chicken with weak legs.

Did you have any success with your hen? I have a 4 yr old hen that is exhibiting the same issues.

Ascites Relief. Did I do it right?

And.....she needs draining again. She seem to need the draining every 4-5 weeks. I am not sure if I am willing to continue this procedure. She is in pretty bad shape today, and the high is supposed to be 98 here, and humidity is higher than normal. So, I don't think today is the day to...

    Force feeding a chicken

I'm in the same boat with one of my hens. For some reason, mine just stops eating and drinking. She drops from her normal 4.7 lbs. to 3.2, just standing around, sometimes sitting, eyes closed. This has been going on since February. Since then, I have done a lot to force feed her food and...

Ascites Relief. Did I do it right?

Well..she’s obviously feeling better, because she is obsessed with digging a hole in the run, and basically eating dirt. I have not seen her eat her normal feed, or drink any water at all since I drained her. I have been force feeding her water, which I’m sure is the only reason she is...

Ascites Relief. Did I do it right?

I hope so! But I also know this is just treating the symptom, not the cause.

And…she’s back out with her flock.

Ascites Relief. Did I do it right?

I was able to get maybe 75ml out of her. I don’t think I hit as good of a spot as last time, or my technique was off. Anyway, she’s on a towel, draining on her own.
