I do like having a rooster :thumbsup.
So yesterday I let the chickens out earlier than usual, because I knew the weather was going to turn wet and cold and very windy (all the pretty colors on the radar, lol) later in the day. I also needed to take one of the kids to an appointment at 4pm, so I...
It's been a learning curve for winterizing. This is our third winter . . .
The first winter we used 6 mil clear plastic attached with furring strips. It looked great, but by the end of the second winter, the plastic had mostly given out - I patched several cracks with clear packing tape and...
Thanks! We completed it in Spring of '21 and really like how it turned out =). We currently have 23 hens and one roo, about max number of chickens for our structure.
Always tweaking, of course 😉.
I like clear plastic - chickens can see out and get maximum light in the winter, and I can see in!
This is our third winter with chickens, and I invested in 30 mil marine vinyl tarps for most of the run this year. I thought about doing marine vinyl roll by the yard and putting in my own...
Your Dad is right - inside would look nicer, but it's not as safe for your chickens.
Solution: attach outside and put furring strips up. A little extra cost, but it does make it look nice.
Here's a pic of our build - the front corner has a furring strips installed on the side but not yet...
This forum is a great resource!
Also, you can google everything from proper ventilation ratios (square feet of ventilation per square feet of coop/run) to the proper pitch for a chicken ramp!
Happy chickening :frow!
Central NYS here . . . Wood chips! We get ours for FREE - all we could dream of to use, lol. I do usually tip the delivery guys with homemade Maple Syrup and eggs 😉.
A local tree service brings them for FREE (did I mention they're free, lol?), and we use them in the run and on pathways and...
I would skip the straw and maybe isolate the bully/bullies for a couple of or even a few days. A time out for bullies can work wonders. I have a large dog crate (turn it upside down if you use one) in our run for broodies in the Spring/Summer, but leave it up year round in case I need to...
I know it's only August, BUT . . .
Winter IS coming!
☃️:wee☃️
. . . and I've been pondering winterizing for this, our third winter of chicken-keeping. My dream the first year was 30 gauge marine vinyl, but it was out of reach, with the cost of the material itself, as well as the added...
I agree with so much of what you said, and thank you for your kind words 🧡.
The video I posted above was helpful, though, in reminding me that chickens are by nature stoic and hide when they're sick or injured, because they're a prey animal and know that if they show weakness they not only...
An update on our sweet ISA Brown . . . she passed late this morning.
The antibiotics seemed to perk her up for a few days - she was drinking and eating watermelon and mash, but not getting better while not getting worse. Her comb actually went back to normal color, but she did get weaker and...
Well, she's still with us. Drinking little bits of water. Ate a couple bits of crumble out of daughter's hand. Gave second dose of antibiotics this morning. Still very lethargic, and comb is purplish, but stable. Fourteen yo daughter is holding her outside to keep her company and give her a...
I'll give it a go - I've pilled lots of dogs and cats, and we just treated another chicken for sour crop with Monistat suppositories (quartered), so yeah, the spitting out I'm familiar with!
