So, a rat has been in my feeder for a few nights in a row. :( I stopped up any holes today, but I think it is time for a rat proof feeder before they get comfy.
I have done some research, there are so many versions, but every time I find one in my budget, the reviews are not great. Stuck...
Yes sorry, I was trying to get close to them with the phone but I can't keep up with my foot in the boot !
Both of the Danish are actually very low in the pecking order, so that could be it. I will have my son catch him tomorrow so we can inspect them better .
I have noticed this before and again today. Both of my Danish leghorns have purple spots in their comb, it's as if one side of it is turning blue.
They're acting normal, eating well, laying eggs.
I'm going to attach some photos. Unfortunately, I am in a boot, and can't chase them right now ...
I gave my hens lots of joghurt with crushed shells after this, as well as some apple cider vinegar in their water. Haven't had one since, thank goodness :).
The ball was soft. We cut it open, and there was yolk! So, it looks like it may be a deformed egg. The skin is soft and "membraney".
We are watching her to see if she lays another, or a regular egg.
One of my hens, I think it was my oldest (3 years old) laid this ball, it looks like it is filled with blood.
I checked all their vents for blood, and they are all acting very normal, so I cannot tell who laid this today.
Any ideas what it is?
Oh, she has! Since they are in the coop, we have taken them "out'. Mama clucks and titters, and the chicks are already pretty adventurous. They pick on her when they are back in their nursery, and Mama is sitting on the 3rd egg.
Our "surprise" chicks are now 3 days old, and and we are still waiting for the 3rd egg to hatch. The chicks seem to be doing fine, but I don't see them eating or drinking from the containers. They do pick (or at least it looks to me as if they are) on the Mama's eyes :( while she is sitting on...
She is! It is amazing how nature works. She is the perfect, a little neurotic :), mother hen. It is so fun to watch them. The chicks are very adventurous. Still waiting for Egg#3 to hatch!
