Thanks. The quoted information above your quote is the reason I looked up information on red sex-linked chickens and what they can produce if bred to each other and to a red purebred rooster, since those two possibilities, especially the latter, seems the most likely scenario from the farm...
Thanks. Do you know if the information shown in that chart/Punnett squares/basic Mendelian genetics are still applicable to this particular situation, just with the different letters for birds? I'm kind of thinking yes, since Mendel discovered that experimenting with pea plants, not even any...
I think this chart shows what would happen when two F1 generation sex-linked chickens are crossed -- resulting F2 generation can include either red or white males and either red or white females, all in approximately equal numbers, so about 25% red males, 25% white males, 25% red females and 25%...
I use Burpee brand organic bone meal and it says right on the label 8% phosphate and 7% calcium, would never use any without this information in the guaranteed analysis, nor any that is not organic, nor "meat and bone meal," just pure organic bone meal with the required information.
Also just...
Obviously as has been explained, your recipe needs a lot of tweaking to get it right, but I also don't just believe but know it to be possible to make homemade food that is better and healthier than any commercial feed but it takes a lot of studying. I've already done this with dogs but put all...
I've been raising enough chickens to supply myself and two dogs (65 and 75lbs) who eat an all raw diet including eggs, each dog getting several eggs per week and I eat up to dozen eggs per week, for over 20 years, have had many different breeds over these years but now I only have Dark Cornish...
Thank you, JRies. I've known what genders my geese are since they were only a month or so old because I vent-sexed them, and it's completely obvious now at this age. I made the videos to try and aid the original poster who is trying to determine the genders of his/her geese, as well as anyone...
OK I made a couple videos that will hopefully help show the differences in appearance and sounds of male vs female African geese. In this first one, when video starts the female, Heather, is in front and shortly after that flaps her wings. She's smaller than the males with a shorter neck, not...
It's not the syllables but the tone/pitch. Males make a high pitched, loud screech while females sound is much lower and quieter. This starts happening with Africans when they're about 3-4 months old.
Thank you both! It's good to know this behavior is apparently normal for geese.
One of the pools has a black rubber drain plug in the bottom and they used to keep pulling that out, inadvertently emptying their own pool. Now I keep a brick over the drain to prevent that.
Such entertaining...
Also, when they walk around, males usually lead, with their longer necks stretched more forward, and females are generally behind at least one male, with shorter neck held more upright. My female absolutely never ever leads, only ever follows the males. If you sit and listen to them for long...
OK, but I have read here that contrary to what many people believe, there isn't a good way to determine gender in geese by appearance of bottom area. My males look like they have just as much or more "soggy diaper" appearance as my female.
Have you tried just vent sexing them? This is...
I have three Africans, two ganders one goose, almost 5 months old. They're being kept with a flock of Dark Cornish chickens, all getting along very well. They have a nice house/coop with a fenced pen around it, with all that within an additionally fenced acre of land. For a few hours a day in...
I've been raising chickens for almost 30 years, and this year got some African geese mostly as guard birds because in the next few months I'm finally realizing my nearly lifelong dream of moving to a farm large enough to way more than supply all meat needs for my family, 240 acres, now have the...
