  • Hi DesertChic. I'm just another gay boy from West Virginia. A friend of mine (a registered nurse +) told me you are a fine and funny person to make contact with. I breed and raise white muscovy ducks, exclusively. I Hope we can be friends.
hoping you can help, I'm just getting back into Turkins, new sites confusing. no clue how to find things. can U explain the difference in NN, Nn, Na . Thanks

Both NN and Nn are kind of "shorthand" for describing Naked Necks, with NN being used as both a overall generic term and also to casually represent a homozygous Naked Neck with a clean or nearly clean neck, and Nn indicating a heterozygous Naked Neck cross with fully feathered birds. Most of us use the NN and Nn incorrectly, but effectively to convey the strength of the naked neck gene prominence in our birds.

Na is the correct, scientific term to refer to the gene that causes the naked neck. It's a dominant trait. A completely homozygous NN will have little to no bowtie because of a double dose of the naked neck gene, giving it the genetic marker NaNa.

NA really doesn't mean anything, but is still often used to indicate the genetic presence of the naked neck gene.
Any luck with more heat tolerant Bielefelder's?

The only way I've really been able to improve their heat tolerance is to cross them with Naked Necks, which means they're no longer Bielefelders. They simply don't handle the heat well. I still have one pure Biel rooster (he's a pet, and I pamper him in the summer), and will be culling my last Biel hen this month as she's already stopped laying again due to heat stress.

Thanks for the update. What do you like that is autosexing for hot humid climates? Im in south Florida. I have Cream Legbars now.

For hot climates I continue to herald the vigor of Naked Neck Turkens, but they're not autosexing. The temps here easily reach 120* for much of the summer, and the NNs shrug off heat that has other breeds fainting from heat stroke. If you're insistent upon an autosexing breed, I'd suggest Barred Rocks. Mine proved quite heat tolerant.

I currently have one splash NN cockerel and one buff splash pullet, but they're too young to breed right now. She lays a blue/green egg and he also carries the blue egg gene. They are two of the sweetest birds I've ever owned. They both have pea combs because of the EE blood in them. I'll keep you posted on when mine reach breeding age.
