It was 84 here yesterday.. and nice for the past few weeks...then we get an insanely cold day (like today when it barely hit 30).. then more nice days.. so it's no wonder the birds are messed up this year.. and thanks to the sleet that we had today our peach trees will probably lose their buds...
Rose stopped at 27..
right now I have over a dozen eggs in the bator and lots of wiggling going on.. also had a few hatch.. so it looks like I'll be overrun with emu this year..lol
We're up to 23 eggs.. still laying 3 days apart
Dorian is still upset with me when he sees me heading for the nest... lol.. even pecked at me when I stole the latest one... poor boy is gonna have a complex!
Sounds a lot like Texas (where I am in CenTex anyway).. snow never lasts for more than a day when on the rare occasion that we actually get any... a few cold cold days with wind chill and frost then warms back up a bit.. at least this isn't the Northern US where they end up waist deep in snow...
lol.. Dorian proves your point.. he is so frustrated with me stealing his eggs and only has three empty shells in his nest that I left there in exchange for the eggs I stole.. but if Rose lays ONE egg now his fluffy behind is parked on the nest and I have to reach under him to steal it...
Dorian sat on the nest for all of one day.. then went back to Rose...
She laid 4 eggs since then (still every three days) so she's up to 21 so far.. more crazy weather due to hit tonight.. going from the 70's to the 30's with snow in one day's time is still a bit for them to get used to
egg 17 has arrived.. Dorian has decided to start setting the nest.. on empty blown out eggs!.. dunno if Rose will lay any more or not.. since she's been sticking to every three days for an egg I can always check under him if he continues to sit on the nest.. otherwise it may be all she will lay...
I have put several empty emu eggs in the nest when I have pulled the good ones.. they refused to take the nerf footballs (others have reported that theirs will take them).. and they know the empty eggs are empty.. BUT mine seem ok with them as replacements
I caught Dorian sitting on egg #15...
Rose laid #13 the other day.. 8 in the bator.. I set the first couple anyway even if they aren't fertile.. lol.. they were pretty cold when I found them (nights had been down in the 20's).. so I figured they are probably duds anyway just from that.. after I check for wiggling in a few days I'll...
I'm debating on offering my extras here or on eBay... lol.. maybe I should just make some really big omelets!
got #12 yesterday.. 7 in the bator.. she's still sticking to one egg every three days for me..
#11 from mine this morning.. getting to be every three days I find another egg...
So that will give me 6 in the bator.. debating on how many chicks I want to deal with this coming spring.. lol
Rose moved her nest.. I suspect it was because of the nasty cold unexpected weather we had gotten lately.. my husband found two very frozen (split) eggs in it and I picked up a new one this morning.. The storms that came through dropped our temps from the 70's into the 30's day temps (and 20's...
