Sorry. The one is higher pitch, but no where near a true quack. Drakes do tend to do well with just each other, but miss Lydia is right about the chickens. I house my ducks in a duck coop and the chickens are in the chicken coop, so I don’t have any issues with them. They avoid each other.
How old are they? I’m not seeing a distinct drake curl and they look bit young to tell that way. Drake curls show up around 12 weeks.
As far as breeding, it is ideal to have at least 4 females per male. But some pairs do okay if the drake isn’t too persistent. And one of my ducks is over mated...
Good idea. I used to do that years ago.
I spent tons of time out there and think it’s niacin deficiency. I’m switching to adding it to the water instead of food and upping the dose. Hopefully he’ll perk up in the next few days.
Not sure if you can see it, but this gray/khaki duckling has a blue bill. Super pretty. I’m wondering if she’s half black runner? But also maybe half khaki? She can’t be both. I only have females of those breeds.
Never heard of it. I do give cayenne, nutritional yeast and garlic in the water the first 2-3 days. I tend to do things herbally as much as possible. I just made them a chickweed salad with nutritional yeast and cayenne on it.
I’ll keep you all posted. So far I’d say 6 female. But the Ancona seem smaller in general than the other ducklings. The Ancona eggs were shipped from someone else. So I’m not sure if that will skew the results… it’s also a bit early to tell on general because there is a 3 day difference in hatch...
I have 17 ducklings that hatched Wednesday- Saturday last week. So over a week old. Yesterday I noticed the one chocolate Ancona seems weaker and smaller than the others. Now, all the Ancona do seem smaller than the barnyard mix egg. Maybe due to nutrition in the parents? Not sure how those...
So I have an interesting observation I have made from 2 straight run hatches so far. At about 3-4 weeks, you can tell who is male of female by size. Now, you would think larger=boy. But it’s actually the opposite. I have successfully figured out genders just by looking to see who is bigger-...
I have a mixture. Welsh harlequin, Cayuga, Ancona, white layer, khaki Campbell, Rouen, and blue Swedish. I have 17 ducklings that are a mix of those as well. 6 are pure Ancona.
How are you liking your borotto? I have one too!
I hope all the ducklings hatch! I love my call- I had 5 but they tend to fly off 😢 so now I’m sticking with full size.
