How long do we have to let chickens rest after processing? We usually let them rest 2 days before putting them in the freezer, but we are processing a dozen birds this afternoon & were thinking of eating one of them for dinner tonight. Thoughts/experiences? Thanks!
You are so awesome! Thank you very much.
This is why I knew this was the right place to come for answers. :)
I believe I have 3 hens, then, as there have been 2 days when we mysteriously got 3 turkey eggs in a day, figuring we must have missed one the day before (but wondering how that...
Ok, so now I have another question. The only reason I believe this turkey is a tom is because it has a "beard". Do the females also get the beard? If so, I may have 3 hens.
One of my girlfriends recently had her midget white tom (who is a beautiful bird, by the way) mount her croc while she was out in the yard doing her chicken chores! It was like... ewww.
Which brings me to another question... do the toms ever take on the "hen" role and go broody? We have one...
I would recommend heritage midget whites rather than hatchery whites. But you gotta go with what you have access to. I have a trio of midget whites, and my tom is gay. Go figure.
Had a GFM for over 2 years and was an active GFM member a year ago when I bought the new computer. I know you do not realize it, but there were about 25 of us regular users who didn't renew after the upgrade because it wasn't user-friendly. I shouldn't have to be a computer expert and change...
I even bought a whole new computer last year, brand spanking new with twice as much RAM, processor speed, and a 500 GB HD to try to fix the problem. Anytime we read a forum thread and hit "backspace", nothing happens. If you right click on the back arrow, you will see the list of Googleads...
BYC has not been user-friendly since their "upgrade" 13 months ago. Good luck to you. You will hit the "Back" button anywhere between 10 and 40 times to go back to the previous page since this happened. They are more concerned with collecting funds from their Googleads than from the users...
We have 3 midget white turkeys that are about 6 to 7 months old. We thought we had all males, but at least 2 of them have turned out to be females. We had raised them with the idea of eating them but have gotten attached to these 2 hens in particular and have decided to keep them. They are...
Right now, I am totally loving Meyer hatchery. I just won their Chicks From Around The World contest on FB & they're shipping me 15 free pullet chicks next week. Am I happy? Oh yes, I am.
Just wanted to make a quick post and first of all let everyone know that Linda is fine, just is taking a break from the computer for a while. She could use some good thoughts sent her way, though. She isn't sick or anything, just going through some stress right now & will be back on BYC before...
I received notification yesterday that I won a contest on Facebook. I am getting a movie popcorn machine, a cotton candy machine, an ice cream maker, a cake pop maker, and 3 other countertop "sweet treat" kitchen appliances that are worth all together about $250.
I was hecka stoked.
I concur with other posts... make a solution of 1/2 to 1 teaspoon or so of preferably Ivory dish soap to 1 quart of water in a spray bottle. Spray your leaves lightly with this solution, being careful to avoid the centers of the flowers so as not to wash away any pollen. This helps deter them...
Probably a shorter list to say what I *haven't* grown this year. I do year-round gardening, fall & winter. In the winter garden this year, I grew "successfully" arugula, spinach, rainbow chard, purple Vienna kohlrabi, scotch curled kale, snow peas, and not-so-successfully cauliflower and...
I have a couple of the black/purple varieties in the ground this year, as well. Cherokee purple, black krim, black cherry, and black zebra stripey. I also planted black prince, but it has not grown very much & doesn't look good... I think I'm gonna pull it. Sometimes it just happens.
Thank you for posting this. We just got our first turkeys a week ago, and they are also midget whites, right about 6 weeks old. We were wondering about clipping their wings like we do with our chickens.
Just acquired our first 2 midget white turkeys a few days ago from a local breeder. They are very cute and sweet, and I love the little noise they make. We got very lucky--got a male and a female (I'm pretty sure--there are distinct differences in their profiles, and the one that appears to be...
