Our little silkie roo is panting, frothing, walking backwards in circles and twitching.....The hen in with him appears fine...we brought them both in the house to cool them down....Does this sound like heat issues or something else?
We open the coop every morning....Everyone comes down the ramp and starts their day! This am one of the roosters didn't come down....he remained in the coop all day...We checked on him and picked him up and checked him over....No apparent injuries eyes appear clear...no runny nose....he is...
Our Blue silkie cock a doodle doo'd today.....so that makes 2 crowing....the one we were pretty sure was a roo...This new crower was a little shocking.....But maybe she was just being a copy cat!!! Chickie see chickie dooooo:love
I have 7 silkies....One has a walnut comb and wattles and has had for quite awhile so assuming this is a roo....The rest of them have just a single black comb and the combs are barely visiable!!! Did I get some cross breeds?? They are all 3 months old....they have 5 toes.. black feet..black...
I have 8 6wk old silkies and frizzles....They are popping out combs.....I know silkies have walnut combs....Only one seems to have what appears to be a walnut comb....turquios ears are showing...are the combs different on male and female???
5 week old chicks are spending their first night in the coop....I'm a little nervous....they will have more room.....Just worried about temp....Have the brooder light in there and at first they just gathered under it....so leaving them alone for a while and will check temp...We had them out and...
This am found a dead chick....was fine and fiesty last night.....I think that it got to cold and he got piled on.....Had up the light last night and I think it got to cold...Live and learn:(

I had put some yougurt out for the babies last night...They weren't real crazy about it so I left it and went to bed....hubby checks them 45 min later and finds 1 flat on its back in the yogurt and stuck!!! Shivering and wet.....He got him out and cleaned him the best he could and then held him...
My chicks were suppose to ship today....I was gone during the day and when I got home I had a message and e-mail from the hatchery.....They apparently had a hatching problem!!! And won't have cochin Bantams for me but will replace them with more silkies or frizzles....I called as soon as I got...
Babies come this week...coop will be 16" off ground enclosed with panels from wire corn crib covered with hardware cloth....We will put 2 panels from corn crib on the ground and place coop above them...hardware cloth will fold over 6" to the inside....is 6" enough for security with the panels...
My chicks are suppose to ship on the 29th.....I am getting really excited and nervous...Hubby and son got the roof on the corn crib/run and he says the coop will be done start to finish this weekend...I have the brooder cage ready and when I was washing it I got to thinking that I think it is...
We are buying a round wire corncrib...Will build the coop inside up off the ground with the nesting box access on the outside...the will have the whole bottom for a run...Will wrap in hardware cloth from underground to half way up..about 4 ft..Is that high enough? Hope to house 2 bunnies in it...
Still kicking the chicken idea around...But some one offered us 2 roosters (3 months old)... We have talked about a tractor type coop...But if we make it stationary and use sand in the bottom will grass still grow through that or does the chicken activity keep the growth down....Will 2 rooster...
