    Wow. This wasn't expected!

Mama hen moved the babies to a new location, but she had to get them over the 2 ft tall fence! How did she do this? I have a rabbit cage surrounded by a pet enclosure inside the big coop. I just put them in this setup today. The chicks hatched yesterday or the day before. Tonight, I went in...

    Pullet or Roo?

I was sure this BCM (now about 10 weeks old) was male, but as the weeks go by, I'm thinking (hoping!) maybe I have a pullet after all. He/she has had a reddish comb since the first week or so of life, but it hasn't changed in several weeks.

just a picture and updates of my flock :)

I just love the way they look pecking around in the green grass, all sizes, colors, ages...its so peaceful. I have been adding babies, new hens, cockerels...no problems so far! There are even a couple of days old babies in this mix, following the mom. I do have a few older roosters outside the...

Hi all. I adopted two broody hens last night and am eagerly awaiting for my eggs to arrive, but the hens don't seem interested in sitting anymore. Any thoughts?

Free or inexpensive Ameraucana or Araucana rooster

I am interested in a roo for my easter eggers to help with the blue egg colors. I will drive up to an hour, possibly two, to pick him up. I'm in central Virginia, not far from the West Va line, Blue Ridge Mountains. Thanks.

Broody Moms' Different Personalities - Two Hens

I have only had two broody hens to develop my opinion, but wanted to share anyway because they are very different. Two hens: my first broody, an austrolorp, hatched eggs she had sat on, and now a my large buff brahma mom who adopted 13 babies I ordered from Ideal. The australorp, while a kind...

    quarantine/eggs

Are people as concerned about diseases from shipped eggs as they are day old babies? I am questioning this because I ordered babies from Ideal to slip under a broody hen without thinking of the recommended quarantine period. I forgot. Can't eggs carry diseases too?

    I ordered baby chicks today

I have two broody hens and wanted to add some new breeds to my flock. I thought about ordering eggs, but had bad luck on my first batch of shipped eggs. I also have many roosters right now. I decided I would slip some new babies under my hens in a couple of weeks and ordered from Ideal. I...

Want: hatching eggs in Virginia (or permitted to ship to VA)

I have two broody hens and would love to add some chicks from another flock. 12-24 eggs. I love brahmas and would love to add cochins to my flock (large fowl only) I like very big birds! I am interested in any heritage breed, including turkeys. I'd love to add some new egg colors. I do...

    A baby died today...

I lost my first chicken today due to something other than a predator or dog... A week old baby became very weak, and died within an hour or two. Sadly, I have another which just began showing weakness. I have tried encouraging them to drink. Both seem frail and on the thin side. I found what...

A 3 1/2 week old baby was eaten by this tonight

My little dog (beagle/cocker spaniel mix) is so sweet. He was outside in the coop and stayed with the chickens until I realized there was a problem. I didn't lock the babies in the crate tonight because some were roosting with the big chicks. I am soooooooo glad they weren't locked in with that...

    When to set?

Hi all. I received my first package of shipped eggs this morning, 6 red bourbons (first experience with turkeys too!) They were in the mail 5 or 6 days (ugh) One was badly cracked... My incubator is holding steady at just under 100 and has been since last night. When should I set? Any other...

    Cute little visitor

I found this little bird on my deck a couple hours ago. He or she can fly. When my son got too close she flew to a tree, and then returned about 30 minutes later. She has let us get very close, like a foot away. I wasn't able to get as close for this picture, but here she is..does anyone know...

    crop? goiter!!!

I had a scare yesterday! I was checking on my 3 week old babies, and saw one with this huge bubble on his chest. I had never seen anything like it before and thought he might have gotten bitten by something. A little later, I realized that at least 3 or 4 others had this problem. After...
