Anyone in Texas Have Their own Slaughter Operation?

Help! Trying to decifer USDA rules from Texas State rules. USDA allows 1000 birds to be slaughtered and sold by a small farmer without inspection and minimum hoops to jump through, but I can't find out if Texas also honors this since their rule regarding the second exemptions, 20,000 birds...

Leg twisted backwards and dead weight

We have one chick, now 1 month old, whose leg dangles uselessly behind her and appears to be twisted completely backwards. I didn't know if this was "splayed leg" someone else described here once before. I remember she cured it in about 3 days by taping the legs together and turning the odd...

Can you Mix Broilers with Regular Chickens?

Sorry, so many questions today... In my July 7 order of 71 chicks and 12 ducks, I also ordered 8 broilers. I did have all the new chicks in one cage and the broilers seemed to be getting singled out and brutalized by the smaller chicks. One injured badly enough it died. I had planned to...

Help! Introducing baby chicks/ducks to grown flock

Our chicken tractor is 14x16, very roomy. The chicken yard itself is a movable 1/10th acre or over 4,000 square feet. We started w/31 chickens and 6 ducks to see how it would go w/predators and all before ordering the rest of our flock. Those I got on April 4 this year. On July 7, I went to...

Are Khakis from Ideal good egg layers?

Hi. I just learned from a Holleread duck book I ordered that not all Khaki Campbells are good layers as some are classified as "standard", an indication they are not true to the original high egg-laying stock developed in England. We want ours for their egg-laying abilities. I have six...

    Ducks plucking chickens?

Help! My six ducks, Khakis I think, pluck the feathers out of my chickens and eat them. They were all raised together, all about 1 month old now, and housed together in the new coop, 14 ft x 16 ft and 5.5 feet tall, so I don't think overcrowding could be an issue. Only 40 birds at this point...

Al or Others--How's Your Homemade Incubator Doing?

Hi. We're just finishing our chicken coop. Next building project will be an incubator, I think. I saw many interesting homemade incubators on here, but Al's caught my attention as we do have some old cabinets. Al, has it been all you expected and are you getting as good a hatch as from an...

We're building our coop for our chickens, campbell ducks and French Guineas that will be housed together. What is minimum size door we'll need for the French guineas to come and go? Hopefully small enough to exclude some large dogs? Thanks. Connie

    Are French Guineas More Profitable?

We are starting poultry in hopes of making profit. So far we have Production red chickens for egg production, barred rocks for egg and chick sales, a small start of Khaki Campbell ducks for duck egg and chick production. We want to add guineas for both insect and snake control and sales. We...

Can You Tell Production Red Eggs from Plymouth Barred Rocks?

The reason I ask is because my new chicks are about 17 BR's and 15 production red pullets, which I planned in housing in same coop. However I was hoping there would be just enough difference in the eggs to separate them, the PRs for sale or use as food and at least some of the BR's for...

Help! How to Keep Feed Costs Down for Profit?

Those of you who try to profit off your chickens, how do you keep feed costs manageable? Particulars, please? I've read I need to keep my costs below 15 cents a pound. You can't do that buying 50-pound sacks at the feed store, so what do you do when you're not a big chicken corporation to...

    Yippee! I finally have chicks!

Finally...finally...finally(!)...I am officially one of you. As of 3 days ago or so, I have 17 baby production red pullets, 15 barred rock plymouth pullets, 6 barred rock straight run (I figured I'd get 4-5 roosters out of that :0). And 6 straight run ducks that I hope and think are Khaki...
