Found these four eggs in the nest boxes yesterday. Our sweet little banty sebright, Nelly's eggs are shrinking.
Here's the chicken who laid the tiny egg...
Our barred rocks, Lucy and Ethel, started laying... not sure which one laid this first egg. You can read about their antics on my blog (PortlandPeeps.blogspot.com). They're living up to their namesakes.
Lucy and Ethel at 5 days old...
Lucy at 6 months old...
Ethel at 6 months old...
Here's what we came up with for keeping our free-roaming chickens out of the raised beds:

We built three cages for each bed so they can easily be pulled off when plants get too tall. I'm thinking things like lettuce, carrots...
I'm still trying to figure out if our wyandotte has ever laid an egg. Today I found an egg that looked a bit larger and whiter than what our bantys lay. Does anyone know what color eggs a golden-laced wyandotte lays?
We have a two year old Golden-Laced Wyandotte who has never laid an egg! Last year I thought she was laying, but turns out it was another hens eggs I was seeing. She does free range, but we have a rather small yard and I've searched the places she hangs out during the day to no avail. Should we...
Here's a shot I took yesterday of our little buff sebright, Nelly. She's the tiniest little thing, but when she lays, the eggs are a nice size. I'm always amazed and think, "I can't believe that big thing came out of her."
She's a real sweetie pie and seemed to enjoy coming inside for a photo...
Today I finally got around to cleaning out the coop, and look what I found in one of the nest boxes... I couldn't believe my eyes. After a 4 month break, it was a mighty nice gift to receive.
we went to a movie tonight and when we came out of the theatre it was snowing. And it's still snowing. There's about an inch out there. Today is the last day of winter vacation and the kids got an extra week because of snow. Yikes, wouldn't it be amazing if school was cancelled again tomorrow?
Santa brought our family a Wii fit game for Christmas. We all took the age test. Here are the results: DD actual age 11 (Wii Fit age 26); DH actual age 44 (Wii Fit age 47); Me actual age 50 (Wii Fit age 37).
My virtual trainer tells me I'm strong, have great abs and am nothing short of a body...
I just went out to make sure the chickens had water and food and there's at least 10" of snow and it's still coming down!! the wind is picking up too. It's around 20 degrees and they're saying the worst of the storm is yet to come!! I don't remember ever having this much snow in Portland.
okay, so i wasn't going to heat, but they were predicting low temperatures for the next week and late yesterday i caved...but only a little. i added a 25w red light bulb in the coop. my dh came up with a solution for keeping their water thawed...but i haven't figured out how to get them to come...
My daughter is in 6th grade (middle school) and has several very large projects all due this week along with mounds of math homework. She's been up until midnight every night trying to get it all done. I don't remember doing these kinds of term papers and projects until college.
We're new to...
today while cleaning my house in preparation for the holidays, i ran across a couple of golf balls and i thought hmmmm... i wonder if i put those in the nest boxes would it encourage them to lay? has anyone had success with golf balls or other fake egg objects?
working away in my home office when I hear the chickens squaaaawkin' up a storm outside the window. I shove my feet in boots and trek out the back door just in time to see a large hawk flying out of the yard. I didn't see anything in his mouth, so I'm sort of relieved, but still freakin out...
HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYONE! These are the 2 pies I made to take to my brother's house. One apple, one pumpkin. I don't have to cook the rest of the meal this year--Yeah!
I have a 9 month old hen for sale. She's laid 2 eggs. I think the problem is our other hens continuously pick on her. She's extremely sweet and deserves a coop where she will be accepted as she is, feathered feet and all.
$30 to good home. I cannot ship her, so you need to be in the Portland area.
