Just wondering what the advantage/disadvantages of retractable wheels vs. fixed wheels are.
I see some chicken tractors with retractable wheels. Others just have a set of wheels hanging off the back end of the tractor (works like a wheelbarrow). Is there any reason to go with the retractable...
I came back from vacation to find two of my hens went broody. I put them in milk crates and one snapped out of it in three days. It's been a week now and the other one STILL returns to the next box first chance she is given.
HOW LONG?! Is there anything else that I should be doing?
I've...
I have a Penedesenca and an Americauna that have not laid an egg since June. The weather has not been particularly hot this summer.
They do not seem to be unhappy or unhealthy. My other chickens are laying just fine.
What am I doing wrong?
I have 5 hens of mixed breeds. One is caring for 3 new hatchlings, one is recovering from having been in solitary confinement for the crime of going broody, two are laying, but the Pendesenca is striking. She doesn't look like she's molting, she's not broody, and we're as close to the summer...
Someone is proposing a new chicken ordinance for the City of Wisconsin Rapids.
I'm not sure I'm so thrilled about it though. They propose a max of 4 chickens.
I am not so convinced that chickens are illegal currently. There is no specific prohibition on chickens in Wis. Rapids. But...
We have a Chantecler hen that went broody so we put a dozen fertilized eggs under her. After coming back from a camping trip I found that she crushed 3 of the eggs and the contents got all over the other eggs.
I changed the bedding entirely and put her back on the eggs.
Now I am wondering...
I have two new chickens that our broody hen hatched. The one pictured is a Silver Penciled Wyandotte. She has bald spots on her wings and a general shabby appearance compared to the Pendesenca which hatched a day later. They are both about 6 weeks.
Is this due to chicken behavior or feed...
My city has wierd ordinances. They have one ordinance that prohibits letting farm animals run "at large". They also have another ordinance prohibiting cages and pens for such animals.
Is that some weird way of trying to outlaw chickens? Or has anyone else heard of cities taking this...
I've got 5 hens, and my biggest one will not use the nest box. I will admit the boxes are a bit smaller than others that I've seen, but the other hens do not have a problem with them.
I suspect the hen in question is the one that had been laying soft-shell eggs before I started offering them...
OK. I got some Valbazen and scrounged up a measuring syringe - the type with a bulb on one end to draw in the medicine. Well that didn't work worth a hoot! Valbazen is only slightly runnier than Elmer's glue and once the first dose was sucked into the syringe the inside was coated with thick...
This is my first winter with hens. I've noticed they don't eat their feed as much but I am not sure if this is because their laying has decreased (although cold temps should bring an increase in appetite). Now I see some have patches of missing feathers around head, neck, and tail.
Is this...
First, I am not asking whether I should feed garden lime directly to my hens - I know that would be bad.
What I am wondering is whether applying garden lime to my lawn would eventually provide a calcium source for my hens. We keep them in a chicken tractor and move it every 3-4 days. While...
I've been finding strange evidence of an egg eater in the coop. I find what appears to be the membrane liner and stains in the wood shavings that look like yolk/white. But not a trace of eggshell. It is always in the coop under the roosting bars, so far we've never found such in the nest...
I've got a chicken tractor but the chickens have begun digging dusting holes. I wanted a tractor specifically so they wouldn't wear out a spot in the lawn and I could keep moving them before they killed the lawn.
I don't want little potholes all over.
Any suggestions?
