A tribute to my two quail lost due to a vicious predator attack and homage to my favorite TV show...
Heisenbird- he had to be put down due to injuries from a predator attack :(
Schraderbird- Missing, presumed dead :(
Worst quail keeper ever here again with another emergency. This is a bad one. Predator attack. Raccoon or fox I think. One bird missing, presumed dead. The other severely injured. I think half his wing is ripped off. Skin above his butt either has a chunk bitten or the feathers were pulled so...
Hi I could really use some help. One of my coturnix hens was missing all the feathers around her neck the other day and it looked bloody. I don't know if the other birds did this to her or if a predator had gotten a hold of her.
I isolated her and kept it clean. I put some peroxide on the neck...
Help- I have a quail hen (coturnix) that I found with a pecked eye. I culled the aggressor (He went mental today or something, it got ugly fast and he was hurting everyone else) and I have her in a cat carrier in my living room. The eye looks pretty bad.
Is there anything I should do? How do I...
My babies aren't babies anymore! Two of the girls started laying eggs at 5 weeks! They are small (2 compared to the one on the right from my older birds) and one is round like a marble. They'll get it right eventually :) Keep on plugging, babies!
So I started noticing that one of my coturnix babies started crowing LOUDLY around 3.5 weeks old. This seems a little premature, no? I have 2 other adult roos outside and they don't crow nearly that loudly! Maybe he is unhappy?
One of my girls keeps hiding all the eggs on me for a day or two. I mean seriously sneakily hiding! She buries them completely under the straw and wood shavings. Then a couple days later she'll make a little nest in the bedding and be sitting on like 5-6 eggs. I feel so bad taking them from her...
So this might be a dumb question... I just hatched eggs from my Coturnix quail. I have a few Pharoah's, I think one golden and one dark brown rooster (Tibetan?).
So of the ones that hatched, I have two of them who look like Tuxedos. Is this some sort of recessive mutation? Or just from having a...
If anyone could help me out quickly I would greatly appreciate it! I noticed this morning a couple of the birds had watery brown poop. I came home from work and one was dead. What do I do? What kind of medicine?
Thanks!!!
So tomorrow starts lockdown for the 15 eggs I set in, I think all are fertile but one. Any last minute tips? So excited!
This might be kind of a stupid question, but I have a LG 9200, bought a freestanding computer fan and have it pointed at the heat element and it's worked out great and the...
So curious about everyone else's experiences... Do quail sense impending weather changes and does this effect their laying?
The reason I ask is because my birds have finally started laying, and laying pretty regularly for the past couple weeks. We are forecast for that big snowstorm to begin...
I checked my quail today (who haven't laid since I got them in October) and saw an egg sitting in the straw. Then I looked around and found 5 more!!! Yay!!!!
After losing way too many birds due to raccoon and rat attacks, I decided enough was enough and made the bottom of their pen 1/4 inch hardware cloth. I was feeling all guilty because they won't get to be on the ground anymore, but safety first for my birds. But oddly enough, my birds PREFER the...
I lost two birds to what was probably a rat attack last night. I found two of them dead, the body of one was eaten halfway and the other one was bitten up around the neck but whatever it was didn't finish the job. I'm guessing rat attack. I found a tunnel under the pen and one of the dead birds...
I have 8 coturnix quail and I feed them high protein crumbles and to make it interesting, I started giving them wild bird seed mix. Now they ONLY want to eat that! They barely touch the crumbles. Does wild bird seed mix give them enough nutrition so that it won't adversely affect their health?
Hi there-
I currently have 8 quail, mostly hens that I got in October. They were about 3 months old when I obtained them and the person I purchased them from said they had started laying. My birds have never ever laid a single egg for me!
I do not have any artificial light on them, just 2 tiny...
