    Which breed next?

So far I have buff orpington, light brahma, and silkie. I'm looking to add more now and considering barred rock and wyandotte. Any suggestions? And if you have a preference, is there a preferred hatchery as well?

    Silkie Cross?

I bought a dozen "Pure Bred" day old White silkies back in March. Now I'm wondering what my "Pure" silkie may be.... Do you think he's mixed with another breed? All the others are solid white. Sorry for the pics - took them with my cell phone. I'll try to get better pics tomorrow.

    Lost our favorite hen today

Our 2 year old Silkie hen ran for the leftovers when my wife threw them out. Actually, all the chickens came running, but our little silkie decided to go for the 2 tablespoons of mashed potatoes. For some reason, she wasn't able to get them down and couldn't breathe. We tried clearing things...

Cock fight - should I be worried?

Our Buff Orpington who has ruled the roost since we got chickens was attacked yesterday by our Brahma/Silkie Cross Roo. I got to them about 10 minutes after the fight started and the Orp was torn up pretty bad. I put the other roo in a separate enclosure, but today the buff won't socialize...

So I got a heated waterer

Tired of dumping ice and refilling water several times a day, I finally bought a one & a half gallon heated water bowl. I went out later that day after we got 6 inches of snow to see if the chickens were getting some warm water....NOPE! Our Buff Orp Rooster decided that it isn't a waterer, but...

    Babies Dying!

We had a hatch of orpingtons last week, and on the 3rd or 4th day, I found one laying in the run. I thought it was dead, but I picked him up and he acted SO sleepy. I brought him in and put him in the brooder, dipped his beak in water and he drank a little but didn't seem interested. When I...

    Egg sizes

I didn't see an egg size chart anywhere. My Brahma's started laying this week and the eggs are slightly smaller than my Silkies. Please tell me they get larger as they get older.....they do right?

Should I move eggs from Incubator?

I have a silkie that went broody 4 days ago. She hasn't left the nest, but there are no eggs. I have six silkie eggs that have been in the incubator 15 days now. Would it be best to go ahead and hatch them myself, or would it be better to take them out and put them under her?

    Getting rid of Cockerels

I have about 15 cockerels going on 4 months old and can't get rid of them. I have posted them on Craigslist and a local yahoo group, but no one is interested. Any ideas on reaching anyone that may be interested in them? I'm located near Greensboro, NC if anyone here is interested. Sexlink...

Help - Mean as a snake!

I have a 4 month old Buff Orpington that I hatched and raised (along with some others), but he his just plain mean! He attacks my shoes when I go out, if you try to pet him he will grab your hand and won't let go. If I walk around the outside of the fence, he will follow like he's agitated that...

    Taking Chicks from Mom

I've increased my run to about 25x30 One hen went broody and hatched a couple chicks Thursday. Do I need to take them and raise them, or will they be okay with mom? I know in the wild, there's plenty to choose from, but being confined to this space, I don't know. I also made the mistake of...

    Chick hasn't grown

This little chick simply hasn't grown. He hasn't shown any signs of sickness. He is very active like everyone else. They all hatched at the same time, so he's the same age as the rest of them. Is there anything I should be doing?

    Hens don't lay - Why?

I got 3 Orpington hens and a Roo back in January. They were about 18 months old when I got them. One has been laying regularly since I got them, the other two haven't laid a single egg. Is that normal? I also have a Silkie trio that just turned 7 months. When should I expect eggs from them?

    What am I?

Looks like 2 different breeds. The dark & light chicks have feathered legs and the solid chicks do not.

    Cross-Breed Chart?

I'm looking for a cross-breeding chart. Does such a thing exist? Specifically, what characteristics are passed on from each type? As an example, Crossing a Light Brahma Roo & Buff Orpington, versus crossing an Orpington Roo with a Brahma hen. What are the differences in offspring? OR if I...
