French Wheaten Maran and Rhode Island Reds, producing black chicks??? Why is that???

G'day all! So I went and put some eggs in my bator to check if my Roo was actually doing his job... turns out he was! And I now have 10 little chicks darting about in a breeder box. But I am flummoxed as to why a few of the chicks are black. Basically the Rooster is a pure bred French...

Why is humidity so important during lock-down?

Why is humidity so important during the lock-down phase of incubating? Mother-hen is not able to change the level of humidity for her clutch, so why is it so important in the 'artificial' method of hatching chickies?

Set some eggs just now, due date 20th July.... anyone else setting just now? Hatch-Along

So, this week my dear husband got hold of 4 Araucana's for me to put in my baby-bator (holds 9 ...12 at a pinch). This evening they have gone in, at 38.5c with humidity at 25%. Aiming for a dry hatch but humidity is so low here at this time of year, I have had to add a tiny amt of water. Due...

Haematoma on 4 day old chick

I have a 4 day old chick - only one to hatch from 6. I'm a little concerned about what I believe to be a haematoma, and wondering if I should do anything with it? It basically has a loose ball above its right wing next to its neck. You cannot see it except when you pick it up you can feel it...

Changing position of eggs half way through incubation

Can this be done? I have 6 Marans eggs that were posted to me. They are now in day 6 of incubation. I candled them last night and noticed that their air-sacs are asymmetrical. Because they were posted I suspect the sacs just didn't completely reform. They are currently laying side-ways but...

Candling eggsperts please check this out - give me your thoughts.

I am hoping for some thoughts/advice on my Isa Brown eggs which I candled last night. There's 6 of them. They were brought round to me by a local fellow who said they had come straight from his incubator and had been in there for 5 days. I then put them straight into mine. Today is now day 7 for...

A real newbie question! Incubating for the first time. Help!

This might sound rather dumb to some but if I don't ask I'll never know! ... do you count the moment you put the eggs in to the bator as day one or only after 24hrs?? I was thinking today would be day 0 and then the next day at the same time as today when I put them in, would technically be...

Just showing off, and wanting to know of others. I had 1/2 doz triple yokers back on Christmas Day - was a lovely surprise. My girls had not long come on lay so I guess it was their bodies adjusting. But it was fun! Anyone had similar? I hear of double yolkers allot.

What's the strangest thing you've used to incubate?

Hello everyone, I am preparing for the arrival of my first fertile eggs to incubate and like all good new Mothers I am trying to get the best of everything for my girls! Researching the right incubator, setting it up, checking for consistency etc. and then getting their brooder box ready etc...
