    Clavamox reaction

My two year old hen started on clavamox a few days ago. It's for a possible infection of her shell gland. She has been laying soft shelled eggs for two months after nothing for six months. Three days ago she started 275 mg of clavamox twice daily. She has become extremely lethargic and vomits...

    Hen eating soft-shelled eggs

The crazy egg she laid two months ago after taking a six-month break. My Black French Copper Marans (2 years old) started laying soft shelled eggs about two months ago. To help her I started offering free-choice oyster shell, in addition to her feed (which also contains calcium). So far I...

    Marans losing all her feathers

My Black French Copper Marans had a light molt in November in which she lost some of her neck and back feathers. They grew back in by February, and she resumed laying eggs in early March. (This photo is from two weeks ago. She has lost a considerable amount of feathers since then.) A few...

Marans laid first egg, then nothing!

Loretta, my Black French Copper Marans, laid her first egg at 19-1/2 weeks. Then for the next week and a half she hasn't laid again. My Olive Egger, Gigi, and Dominique, Nellie, started laying at the same time, and have been churning out the eggs. Loretta seems healthy, and energetic, so I'm...

Moving: Need to find a chicken-friendly town near Brighton, Michigan

I may be moving in the near future, and I need to find a town that allows chickens. Ideally, I would like somewhere between Ann Arbor and Lansing, and that feels like the Brighton area. I have three hens. Any direction would be greatly appreciated.

Moving to the coop (night time lows in the high 30s)

My three chicks are five weeks old, and fully feathered. I am hoping to move them to the coop full time in the next week or two. My question is if they will be OK without a heat lamp with temperatures at night in the high 30s and low 40s. Many thanks in advance for your advice!

    Chicks with blood on beaks

I have three five-week-old chicks. Today, after putting them out in the coop for the day, I noticed they all had raw spots on their beaks (above where the beak attaches to their head, but below the comb). They looked a little bloody. Is this normal? Are they pecking at each other? I haven't seen...

Bare spots by ears (4-week-old chicks)

Today I noticed all three of my four-week-old chicks have small bare spots beneath their ears. No signs of blood. I'm sensing that since they all got them at the same time, this could be normal. Has anyone heard of this? Here is a picture: This is my Dominique. I also have an Olive Egger and...

    Play time outside?

My chicks are two weeks old. Fully feathered wings, but still mostly fluff. Tomorrow will be warm for Michigan (60 degrees) and I was thinking of bringing them outside to the run for 15 minutes. Is this too young for a quick playdate outside?

    Chick shaking head, opening beak

I have a 10-day-old Black French Copper Marans that tonight started twitching her head, then opening her beak. She appears to be eating and drinking, and can walk. Anyone know what this could be?

    Week-old with impacted crop?

My one-week-old Dominique has a large bump on her chest that I noticed last night. After reading the forums here I realize it's probably a full crop. But this morning, it's still there and a bit bigger. I tried a little massage, but I'm not sure what to do. Any suggestions or reassurance is welcome!

    Chick with diarrhea

I have three four-day-old chicks that I got from a hatchery. Yesterday I noticed one of them has diarrhea (it leaves a dark brown watery spot, with a poop in the middle). All three are active, and eating/drinking normally. I have vaccinated all three for mareks. I called a chicken vet, and short...

    Sleepy chick

Hi everyone! Today I picked up three gorgeous chicks, and I have a question about one of them. Two are very alert (with random naps) but one seems to sleep most of the time. This chick is smaller than the other two (they are all different breeds). We picked them up at Meyer Hatchery in Ohio, and...

    Chicks this weekend!

I'm a first time chickeneer, and will be picking up three chicks from a hatchery this weekend. I'm beyond excited. Is anyone else getting their chicks this weekend? Any advice for this newbie?

    Meeting our neighbors

We're getting chicks in a couple weeks, and today decided to share the news with our neighbors. I wrote a note detailing our backyard chickens adventure and put it in a basket filled with egg-shaped goodies. So far, the neighbors have been great and very excited to be part of the process. I...

    I just ordered chicks!

Last night I put in my order with Meyer Hatchery for three chicks. I want to thank everyone here at backyardchickens.com for helping me narrow the search for a hatchery. I previously had selected one in northern Michigan, but it didn't feel right. Then here I read about the great customer...

    Chicks in the car

Next month we will be driving to a hatchery to pick up three chicks. My concern is that it's a three hour drive, and I'm wondering about keeping them warm for the ride home. Will they be OK?

Detroit version of Wichita Cabin Coop

We are almost done with our version of the Wichita Cabin Coop. We will be installing the hen house door tomorrow. After that some minor stuff is left, like installing the ramp, building the windows, adding some trim and getting a bunch of sand for the run. We started working on this in...

    Greetings from the Motor City!

Hi everyone! My boyfriend and I are first-time backyard chickeneers. We plan on getting three chicks in late February from a hatchery in northern Michigan. In the meantime, we have spent the last three months building a palace, umm, I mean chicken coop for our soon-to-be girls. So far the...
