What is the smallest pen you can (would) keep a rooster in? Should I stick to the old rule of thumb of 4 sq ft for house and 10 for run? I only want the roos for breeding, not riding and terrorizing the girls.
Texas gets hot, Well, Texas is hot, 90 is a cool day in the summer. Is there any point that you won't give away or eat an fresh egg? 90, 95, or 100 degrees outside? After being in the box (covered & shaded) one, two, or three days, etc..
This will be my first summer with layers. We don't...
How often do you use these type of products? Should it be part of their regular diet or wait until there's a problem? Don't want to throw money out the window but also subscribe to a an ounce of prevention versus a pound of cure.
A bit confused on the egg freshness issue. On one hand, I hear they can stay fresh for weeks if you leave unwashed, bloom intact. Then, I see a jpg like this one. Before I grow my flock and start giving eggs away, can I get the skinny on this.
Not sure how I missed this, I like to sit in the coop and watch chicken tv as often as I can.
This looks really bad to me, is this treatable? My first thought is bumblefoot surgery and standard follow up. Please advise.

Walked away from my flock for 20 or so minutes and came back to a pile of feathers. Wondering what got my chicken. No blood, no corpse, just feathers and just marks in the ground. On twelve acres in rural SE Texas. There are dogs, cats, fox, possum, coon, hawks, snakes, etc..
Every hawk...
Dog and cat owner so my thought is scoop it out every day.
Some say don't worry about it, chickens are the ultimate recyclers, some say no problem with deep litter method. What say you?
Building another coop. Old coop has rear access (four boxes) for egg gathering and I'm not sure I want the extra construction on my next one (10+ boxes).
What say you?
First time with new chicks.
Have some new chicks, a week or two old, and noticed a couple are starting to "molt". Can't see any lice or creepy crawly stuff on them.
Feeding Purina Start and Grow, medicated, added chick grit, and keep a bowl of plain yogurt out for them.
The heat lamp is...
Stumbled across our "first chicken" yesterday, a stray rooster that was running around on our property. Managed to trap him, can provide the long story for a chuckle, and make him comfortable.
My question is how long should I "jail" him before letting him out? We'd like to keep him.
