I am trying to feed more whole grains to my flock but, having spent the better part of today googling, all I can find are places that will ship grain to me.
YIPES at the cost of shipping!!!
Does anyone know a seller down here in Florida? Central Florida would be best but with the cost of...
I want to scale up my chicken hatching to an actual business so am now researching the equipment I will need.
Any information on really reliable incubators will be GREAT!
Right now I have a hovabator but I need something way better than that for what I have planned.
So I am off to England this summer and have suddenly thought, why not bring some Cream Legbar eggs home with me? I cant see my ever paying $33 a chick but a pound an egg, yeh, that works lol.
Does ANYONE know what the rules are for bringing eggs home from abroad? Flying out of England and...
I was just gifted with 4 roosters that are about a year old each. One of them is really sweet and pretty but we really DONT need him breeding with the bigger girls. As he is a silky cross he is even small for butchering so, as hte kids really like him I was wondering if we could caponize him...
So I had 10 eggs going well (due for lock down in 2 days) when a friend gave me a dozen fertile eggs 4 days ago.
As I had room in the 'bator I put them in.
Is there a trick to hatching different ages of eggs in the same 'bator?
I have them in an egg turner so could take out a few of the...
I started our goslings off on game bird starter (30% I think) but I have started to wonder, as grazers, should geese and goslings eat a grain based feed? Wouldnt something like Rabbit feed be more suitable?
We have one lonely goose (Elvis by name) and he is the only survivor of his flock. We got him for free when the rest were taken, one per nigh, until he was locked up safe. He lives with the PBPs right now and he is head and shoulders taller than they are lol.
Having just gotten him three...
So I got a free goose on CL and was going to eat him. Turns out he has big blue eyes, a super sweet nature and his name is now Elvis.
At the feed store yesterday they had goslings and, on impulse, I got two yellow and one grey one.
They also are really sweet and so much smarter than most...
We hatched 6 Muscovy ducklings this spring but we are moving to the coast this summer and will be on saltwater.
How well do they handle saltwater?
I know geese, swans and several kinds of ducks swim in saltwater but don't know about our babies.
It is about two hours out of the eggs with legs widely splayed. I think its claws got caught on the floor wire in the 'bator and it did a split.
My brain is trying to tell me all about taping legs together but no details lol.
So how do I help this little critter?
First, I was NOT the one who caught the duck, moved the eggs and then let the duck get away.
That person was a well intentioned but really REALLY stupid person!
My problem now is, 16 eggs in the bator for two weeks and no signs of life.
I have candled them but all I see is a clear spot at...
So I have been opening the bator and misting the eggs like I was told to do but, last night, I was so tired I forgot to close them up again.
*sob*
So are they all dead now?
I closed it up and they are warm again but they were without heat - house is set at 70 - for 7 hours.
Should I just...
I have always given my quail a full feeder and never had a problem before but I killed 8 yesterday and found these ones had fat in places I didn't know a bird could pack it on!
They get 21% game bird starter.
7 were held back from yesterdays cull in the hopes of getting some eggs, they were...
My flock consists of 14 birds. We get 4 eggs per day. I KNOW three of the hens laying by sight adn the young hens are starting to lay.
But at least 6 older hens have not been spotted in the nest box.
Is there an easy way to tell if a hen is laying? I am hungry for a fat, roasted, hen but...
Feed is going up and up and up so I am wondering........................
Do I HAVE to feed bagged feed to them or can I feed oats or duckweed or something else entirely?
Right now I have 7 but am going to start a hatch soon. Its been tooooo long since we had fried quail!
Today is supposed to be lock down but we have four hatch already. The turner is still in place. Do I just leave it in there? I am afraid they will get stuck in or under it.
With the quail I take the trays out but as they are hatching already I dont want to kill any eggs at this stage by...
One of my quail got itself wedged between the wire of its cage and a large plant pot. My dog then pressed on the wire.
Result, one broken quail.
He lay in the pen for a day or two, only moving to eat and drink but as he seemed happy enough I left him to see how he would get on. I know well...
I know chickens can stay in the bator for up to 24 hours and quail have to come out as soon as they look a little bit dry because they have to eat asap.
How long do keets stay in?
If they hatch, that is lol.
I was just gifted with 24 guinea eggs - woooohooooo lucky me - but now I need to hatch them.
Could one of you lovely experianced folks tell me how to do that? We have a bator and egg turner so I just need temps, times and lock down dates.
Oh, and what do keets eat? I have game bird starter...
