    strange egg

I am thinking that the bird who layed this egg stopped laying for a while now and is laying again. She is a red hen mind you, but egg looks pale in color. It is quite large with a obviously weak shell. Any thoughts on this strange looking egg would be welcome.

why would a bird stop laying?

We have a bird who is at least a year and a half to almost two years old, and she no longer lays eggs for 4-5 months. I was wondering if she could have a parasite that did this or some disease that caused this problem? She still eats and pecks around. Appears to be happy doing her little thing...

Egg Yolk Peritonitis versus Cancer causing swelling of abdomen

I had to have a favorite bird, Sweet Pea, euthanized today. She was our lone survivor of several attacks on our original flock, and quite the little character. It was so sad. We miss her cute little presence and her sweet little sounds. She had a distended belly and was not eating for the past...

    behavior change in hens

We have three hens, with one from our original flock, and three that we purchased as companions for her so she would not be lonely. Our original flock was raised by us, and very friendly. After three animal attacks, only one bird was left from that flock, and she acted differently as a...

    Alpha hen problems

We lost 7 of our 8 chickens and had a lone hen left. She was alone for two weeks and the we were able to get pullets old enough as companions for her. She is 2 years old, and they are about 6 or 7 months old. We got three of them she attacks them whenever there are treats given. How can we get...

    Introductions

We lost 7 of 8 birds this spring to coyotes. Since we had one bird Sweet Pea left to herself, we decided to get three pullets for companions for her. We went to get the birds, and noticed that one didn't want to go with us, as she kept popping her head out of the box and making little growls...

How to keep low lead content in the feed??

A question that is burning for me, and I am hoping somebody else has inquired about this as well. For our next flock, we want the lowest lead possible in our eggs. We found the soil and water were very low, and we have no paint chips. We had our eggs checked, and they had a high lead content...

Found one of our babies--who survived an attack this past Sat

We had an attack on our birds this past Saturday, and thought that only one bird survived out of 8. Today, we were taking a walk to look for predator tracks on the land, and low and behold, I found one of our babies hiding under a shed, limping. We had a snowstorm this past week, and a cold...

Wanted to buy chickens- northern MI

I am looking to buy a few birds to go with my solitary bird, as she is the lone survivor of an animal attack. I would like her to have companion birds so she would not be so alone. I am in northern MI in the Traverse City/Interlochen area.

What animal would would eat so much at one time?

We lost 7 birds at one time. The only thing left was feathers, and one wing of one of the birds. We saw large canine tracks on the ground. Could it be one big dog or a pack? Or a coyote? Can a dog eat 7 birds at one time--bones and all?

    Lone survivor of attack

This past weekend, we lost 7 of our 8 sweet birds to some animal with large paw prints, that looked canine when I compared them to those on the Internet. It was during the day when it happened. My fiance' was home cleaning, and didn't hear anything until he went to the coop to put the girls...

chicken (flock) behavior after an attack by a predator

We had one of our beloved little birds killed by a raccoon last night. We thought they were secure in their coop with the pen we had built, but apparently it was not enough. I cleaned out the remains of the bird and the poop left behind from the raccoon that was left on the ground. Today, the...

bird just wants to sleep at this point

I have a chicken that I posted about not too long ago--almost two weeks I believe ( as having white poop coming out of her back end. I thought she had a prolapse. We separated her as the other birds would attack her bloodied white poopy drainage and perhaps the red that they saw.. She appeared...

    Chicken behavior changes

As I could not find any thread addressing this topic: We have a chicken who was the friendliest bird (it appeared that way to us) who would always come up when we come and bring any treats or food. She would be the fastest one to get them, but later appeared to get a lower rank in the pecking...
