    Broody accept extra chicks?

Has anyone added extra chicks to a broody hen? My broody sat on 6 eggs & after 22 days I didn't think thay would hatch, so I bought 3 x 1 day old to give her. When I went to remove the eggs on day 24, 3 of them were chirping. They hatched but were very weak, so I kept under a heat lamp indoors...

    Saddle or not?

A friend of mine has a hen in full moult & the rooster has taken a fancy to her & is causing feather damage as well. Should she fit a saddle on the hen or not? Saddles are usually very uncomfortable with new features coming through.

    What medication to give chicks?

I have two 10 week old chicks & I have been feeding them on what I thought was medicated chick crumb. I was told it was medicated, but never thought to check the bag ( I know.. I'm stupid). So these chicks haven't had any medication whatsoever, & they have been let out free ranging most days...

    Poorly Chicken

Found one of my girls this morning on the floor of the coop, have felt her all over & can't feel any broken bones. She just seems to have lost the use of her legs. She was fine yesterday & when I checked in the evening all chucks were on their roosts. I am wondering is she fell of the roost &...

    One sorry looking chicken

I only have 11 chickens, most have finished moulting and started laying eggs again, but this Minorcan is in a real sorry looking state. The coop looks like someone had a pillow fight.

    Broody hens

I have been keeping a few hens for about four years now & one white leghorn has gone broody every year, successfully raising chicks each time. When she is ready to sit on eggs, I place another box in the run against the coop so she & the chicks are separated from the others, but still in the...

    Help identify this chicken.

Could anyone tell me what breed of chicken this is. It's 11 weeks old now & when I acquired the eggs that it came from, the shell was marked SLW which was supposed to be a silver laced wynadott ? In fact there was 2 eggs with SLW & both chicks look the same. Somehow I think it might have been...

    Rooster bullying just one hen.

My problem is that my rooster is bullying just one of the six hens I have. 4 of the six hens I have had for about 3 years & back in late July one of my girls hatched out 4 eggs, which produced 2 hens & 2 cockerels. I gave away one cockerel as he was very aggressive to the others & me. The...

    Is this cancer? (Grafic pics)

One of my chickens died last night. She was a white leghorn & the smallest of all my girls ( i used to call her scrawny) but she laid the largest eggs. Yesterday she wasn't quite herself & this morning she was dead, looked like she just dropped of the roost. In the last few weeks i have lost 2...

    Broody hen turned sick

My white leghorn turned broody again about 3 weeks ago ( this is her 3rd time). Last yr I gave her 5 fertile eggs & she hatched 2, so this time I put 6 under her 2 weeks ago & up till this morning she has been doing great. I gently lift her out twice a day to make sure she gets something to eat...

    Hatching eggs

Hi everyone, Last year around this time, one of my white leghorns went broody. I put 5 fertile eggs under her & 2 hatched. ( Both turned into really fine cockerels, which went off to new homes). She has gone broody again & I have acquired 10 fertile eggs. My question is, how many is too many...

Why do my chickens get bubble eye?

I have 9 laying hens, (3 white leghorns, 2 brown leghorns, 2 blackrock, & 2 plymouth barred rock). My question is, why do they keep getting bubble eye? This is the 3rd time in the 18 months i've been keeping them. On the last 2 occasions i have got the medication from the vet, & will again...

    New member in Ireland

[Hello everyone. I am relatively new to keeping chickens, but whenever i needed info about them I would turn to BYC. I started with 6 hens just to have a nice supply of fresh eggs for ourselves & nearby family. After adding another 3, one hen went broody so i acquired some fertile eggs from a...
