Which is what they told me at the feed store when I bought this chicken as a chick. I know she is a mutt, but I'm curious to know what breeds she is possibly made up of. I originally thought she would lay a white egg because of her white ear lobes, but she surprised me with an olive green egg...
So I bought this chicken as a 3 week old "barred rock pullet". I think it's probably around 3 months old now. It's coloring is not looking like any barred rock I've seen and it's definitely starting to look like a rooster. Would love to hear what you way more knowledgeable folks think. Thanks...
We've been eating the eggs almost as fast as they've been coming, but I finally managed to gather enough for a half dozen! Aren't they pretty?
Here are the girls that layed them:

One question:
Goldie has been laying non-stop for about 22 days now. I thought Chickens took...
I just cracked this egg open today and I did a double take, it looks like the photos I've seen of fertile eggs...but I thought I had only girls! Please tell me I'm wrong!
After waiting for what feels like forever...my 24 week old RIR, Goldie finally started laying! She is the first of our flock to start laying. So far we've gotten 3 eggs from her. The are a bit on the small side which doesn't bother me at all...I'm just so happy to have eggs!

Someone please school me...
I just noticed the other day that my 2 EE's have different looking combs! Then I stumbled upon a post about the blue egg laying gene being closely tied to the pea comb gene etc. etc...and it got me wondering about their combs (only because my girls are 22 weeks and...
I want to be able to train my girls to come when called and the only way I can think of doing that is with treats. I've offered cheerios, millet, sunflower seeds, broccoli, carrot, tomato, grapes, strawberries, oats...the list goes on and on. My girls are around 5 weeks old and they simply...
I was curious about male vs. female traits. This is all still so new to me, so I have no idea if this is an obvious tell or not...but I have a 3 week old EE chick that has been displaying an upright tail. She is the only one that does this. see photo:
Is this a common male trait? Her sister (in...
So I made the mistake of trying out the old wives tale of holding a chick upside down by it's legs to determine gender. My barred rock chick was the only one that struggled. Now I'm fearing that it's head spot looks more like a boy's head spot... what do you think? Any opinions would be appreciated!
I hope this is the right place to post my question...
I am hoping to eventually buy 3 chickens from a local farm. I want to get a Silver Laced Wyandotte (I think they are so beautiful) and an Ameraucana (can't resist the green eggs) but I can't decide on the third. Based on your experiences...
Hello from San Francisco,
I love this site! This place has been my go to site for anything chicken related. No chickens yet, my husband and I are still building our coop and I'd like to do more chicken rearing research before we take the plunge. I have a ton of newbie questions...I'll definitely...
