    Purple combs?

I have four almost 22 week old Buff Orpingtons. Two of them layed their first eggs today(picture attached) but they have very odd combs. They are HUGE and the end is turning purple. I have one good picture of it but the other chicken wouldn’t stand as still. They are being fed Purina flock...

    Daily Schedule ?

Hi all, do you have schedules that you follow for taking care of your chickens? I feed them in the morning, and let them out to eat grass. In the evening I bring them back in and clean the waterer. I have a small flock of only 4, so I also spend some time loving on them. Again, what do y’all do?

    So eggcited!

My BO chooks are almost 21 weeks old and have huge red combs. Can’t wait for those eggs! Here’s my question, when will they start to lay? Can I help them along? My approach to chickens in the past hasn’t been very hands-on, so this is kinda new to me.

The chicken in question has the following attributes: •red comb that seems almost swollen and has a more spiky shape •tail feathers facing more towards the ground •very curious and almost aggressive behavior •NO narrow saddle feathers •makes a...

    What are the basics?

I’m planning on culling a cockerel I have in a few weeks. He is a 13 week old Buff Orpington cockerel. What can I do to prep him? Should I separate him and have food available 24/7? What materials do I need? Any educational videos that might help me? How should I dispatch him? His size and...

    Help!

My chickens have always been messy with a “regular” waterer so I bought a 5 gallon bucket with watering cups(4). It releases water when I press the yellow thing towards the bucket but when I simply press down it only lets out a very small amount of water. My chickens will drink from the cups but...

    I’m so confused

I have four 11 week old Buff Orpingtons. I THINK that three are pullets and I have no clue about the other. Usually I can see a picture of a chicken on here and tell if it’s a cockerel or pullet, but I’m so confused about my own. Please help! Attached are pictures of all four

    Add more chickens?

I currently have four 10 week old Buff Orpingtons. One might just be a cockerel so I’m probably about to have three. I have always loved calmer breeds because although they are there to lay eggs(eventually) I love to spend time with them, having a chicken on my arm makes my day. Would I be...

Questions about the Deep Litter Method

I have a sand coop right now and it has been raining for about two weeks. Obviously, this is causing issues. I want to switch to the deep litter method. To start this can I use pine shavings and city supplied wood chips? How do I keep this system working well? What sort of things should I add...

    Pullet or cockerel?

I’ve got four Buff Orpington pullets(supposedly). They are four weeks old and one of them has a comb that is a bit more red at the base. Is this a pullet losing her baby fluff early or a cockerel with a red comb coming in? The pictures are of my non-red combed pullet and the chick in question

    Switching feed

I first started my four chicks on a 20# bag of Dumor starter & grower. I’ve since heard bad things about the food. Although my chicks haven’t had problems yet, I don’t wanna risk it. If I cold turkey quit this food and start using a different brand would that upset my chicks? They are only three...

    Here to learn!
