Red rounded up his girls for the night.

3-4 nights a week, I let the chickens roam around the yard for a few hours. I wont let them out alone for fear of predators as we have fox and raccoon and possum. So my Red, a BO 16 weeks old started crowing regularly about 2 weeks ago. Tonight I saw the first sign of really dominant roo...

I have a flock of 15 birds--13 weeks old. They have been living in their run for 8 weeks. I really want to start having them free range sometimes but am so afraid that they will not make it back to the pen. How do I go about letting them have some time outside. I was thinking that I would...

Boxer "too important" to play with the schnauzers

We have a visiting boxer(dog) this week and the schnauzers and boxer that we have have been very accomidating. However, I have decided that the visiting boxer--Sara believes that she is too important to play with the likes of a little dog. She plays wonderfully with the other boxer, but...

    What is normal feather loss?

I have 15 ten week old chickens-- 13 pullets and 2 cockerels. In the last few day, I have been seeing increasing numbers of feathers in the pen. I dont mean one or two, we are talking hundreds. I see no signs of bald areas on the chickens, and sit next to the pen for 10-30 min a day and...

I have 15 9 week old chickens, and this afternoon, I went out to the pen and saw a 2 foot black rat snake slithering out of the pen being watched by all 15 chickens. I know black rat snakes will eat chicks and eggs, but how about pullets and cockerels. I have also read that full grown chickens...

    Very weird chicken behavior

I am new to chickens, so really don't have much experience. My 5 week olds have been outside in their pen/coop for 2 days. So far they have not learned how to walk up the plank to get into the coop so yesterday we put them in the coop without complaint, closed it up for the night and all was...

    Do Barred Rocks Develop slowly

I have 14-- 2 1/2 week old chicks. All but my 2 barred rocks have body long wing feathers and tail feathers. The 2 barred rocks that are both supposed to be pullets have little stubby wing feathers and no tail feathers. Are Barred rocks know to develop more slowly than other breeds?

2 weeks ago, I got 14 wonderful little fuzzy butts from McMurray. I am just wondering if this little one really is a black austrolorp. I thought they were supposed to be all black and this little girl has some pretty white feathers on the bottom of her wing. I have been trying to figure out...
