Can I move this broody banty?

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this topic, but received no answer in the Hatching section.. I have a broody in a wire dog crate in my utility room. Primarily because it was way below zero with blizzard conditions when she started. (It was a suprise. This is my first year with...

How do I break a broody?

I have two banty hens that are occupying space in my nesting boxes that are 4 ft off the ground. I do not want chicks at the moment. I have taken the eggs from underneath them, but they still sit there. Any help is appreciated.

    Unexpected broodies

Hi folks. I have two banty hens that seem to be going broody. They don't want to get out of the nest boxes. I don't want any more banty hens, so I thought about placing other eggs underneath them. Question is, my boxes are 4 feet off the ground at least and it is very cold here. How can I get...

    Changing of the guard

Was wondering if anyone else has had this sort of disruption in their flock and approx. how long until things calmed down? The leader, an Old English Game banty roo has been usurped by my large RIR roo. He's battered and bloody about the comb area. Everything is in a uproar. I have three more...

    Butt picking babies

Hey Peeps. I have to leave my computer, but wanted to ask about this. I have 27 chicks in a barn area of 4x12. They are going on 4 weeks old. They have an outdoor access hole with a run of 6x6. I am starting to see picking on the vent area and tail feathers of my 4 Cornish Rock Cross chicks. The...

    Temperature swings

Hey folks. We're having crazy temperature swings here. It was 47 this morning but the high today will be 82. It's driving me batty. I have thirty 3 week old chicks. They have a 4x15 foot area in the barn, and a run outside. The barn doors, windows and run are blocked by blandex boards at night...

    McMurray Order arrived

FYI to all... I received my order of 25 EE female chicks, 5 Cornish-Rock females and 1 "exotic" chick Friday. One EE was dead in the box. One Cornish died yesterday. Another EE is blind. There are what appear to be 3 or 4 more runts. I know there will be some losses, but I can't say I'm wholly...

    Black fungus?

My Rooster has some black stuff on his comb. It doesn't look like mites, but I am having a hard time catching him. He roosts up in the rafters. Has anyone heard of a black fungus? I think one of my hens has some white fungus below her ears. Does anyone know of a remedy? Thank you for any help.

    Grandma taught me

Greetings everyone! I am a Kansan, new to BYC, and to being an owner of chickens. I have always wanted them, since I was little. My Grandma kept chickens, ducks and guineas. I remember her keeping the chicks in a box in her old oven to keep warm. It's always been my dream to have my own. I told...

Banty Rooster and RIR hen question

Can my banty roosters mate with RIR hens? I have 2 Roos and 7 RIR hens. I DO have one banty hen as well. I bought a RIR rooster and hen pair, but they are the lowest on the pecking order. I wanted the RIR Roo to be #1, but he's too chicken! Any thoughts?
