My dog just put one quick paw on our chick and now this.. I’ve been reading a lot but need immediate advice! She has some energy but is slowly fading.. if someone says to push them back in, we’ll do it,, just don’t want to cause more pain.
MY girl seems fine-- hopping around, eating, drinking, etc... but there's still blood on her leg/feathers and the flies are bothering her a bit. Her leg is literally dangling -- but she's hopping around the yard strongly. Is there hope for her leg? Does splinting it help her balance or help...
And how does that affect them moving forward?
Two nights ago, 1 hen (out of 5), got killed INSIDE the coop and then the predator scampered off without any more damage (my husband heard noise and ran down to coop to scare him away). The girldsliterally had to step over their dead, decapitated...
I am fully aware that it's not IF predators come, it's WHEN. With that said, I am so frustrated with the relentless and aggressive raccoons in our neighborhood. We've lost quite a few chickens in last few weeks, some during the day (rabid coon, I'm guessing, since we spotted one the day prior)...
I know they're flock animals, so it breaks my heart to see it wander around the brooder all day by himself. I hatched 2 (out of 7) eggs and one died this morning :(
What should I do? Just lots of TLC from us humans or get some chicks in there quick before she dies of loneliness?
How can I help this little one?? I was nursing and caring for its splayed leg sibling and my 4 year old was rough with it. Now he's unbalanced, hesitant to walk, and falls forward sometimes. Does he just need rest? How can I help it? I'm so mad at myself for allowing this to happen! Help...
Just hatched out first batch and over the moon excited.
Second one had difficult hatch and has red marks on her feet (blood?) and can't walk. She always resorts to laying on her right side. I have a band aid brace on her now and dip her beak in water a few times a day and offer food. She is...
I just put 7 eggs in incubator today. I have a pretty basic incubator with no hydrometer. The plastic transparent dome is a little foggy and eggs are sweating so I lifted the dome slightly to provide more ventilation. How can I make sure humidity is at right level without hydrometer? Do I need...
I was sold 5 chicks when they were about 2 weeks old. Now that they're about 12 weeks old, I'm pretty sure one of them is a male. S/he has iridescent green feathers on his/her backside, and "its" wattle is bigger than the rest, its bigger in size, etc etc etc. My question is...
What should I...
I can't believe it's been 4 years since I've been on BYC! I was a total newbie raising 3 RIRs and you all welcomed and advised me with such love and patience and wisdom! Since then we've doubled our (human) brood (totaling 4), and moved to a new house/neighborhood (raccoon and deer country)...
We have 3 RIRs, or I should say 2 now. A raccoon got one of them a couple days ago. The other two haven't been the same since. Now we are up hearing the cries of our girls' fear. The raccoons keep coming back. I secured one chicken in the shed for the night (she refused togo in her henhouse)...
We just got back from a movie (1 am) and came to find our hens not only awake but making noise and wandering around their run - this has NEVER happened. They are always in a row walking up their ramp into their coop at dusk and no matter how much noise we make bringing in the garbage, etc, they...
Any ideas of keeping my hens safe and alive during this crazy hurricane we are expecting this weekend? I am in Queens, NY and we are expecting pretty bad conditions.
My plan simply is to lock them in their coop and hope the winds don't blow the coop away (it is not secured into the ground, but...
I've had my girls for 2 months and in 1 month they turned a beautiful baseball-field-like area of grass (their oversized run) into dirt. I wasn't expecting anything less and am happy for them, but now I want them to have stuff to peck at all day! Their run is 100% dirt now. Is this normal...
I really have no idea...i am thinking $10/day + eggs.
I will have the person coming from locally (within 5 miles) and am asking them to come 2x/day - to let them out of their coop in the morning, hang out with them a little, and then return in the evening to put them back into their coop.
Any...
Is this possible?
I usually let them out of their coop by 8am, and then they're happy. But when I start to hear the cackling at 6am, it drives me crazy and I am just hoping my neighbors aren't hearing it. Sometimes I just wait around in bed and don't go out until 7:45 to show them that no...
I plan on going away for 3 weeks in August. I don't have someone yet to care for my 3 chickens, but when I do, I don't expect them to let them out in their run, as I don't know anybody who is a chicken lover and am expecting them to just make sure the feeder and waterer are full - maybe come 2...
I have been reading what everybody does with their chickens and am feeling a little inadequate. The following is what I do for my chickens. What else, if anything, should I be doing?
-Make sure food and water is always full
-Supply treats/table scraps
-Talk to them
-Collect eggs
-Clean coop...
Is this sinister? I have only had them a week and I used to (for 2 days) pick them up and put them in their coop when it was time to go in, but now I am bringing treats to get them in. Will they hate me for this?
I realize that you usually don't have to make them go in at night, but I have...
I have been giving them scraps every day. In the morning when I go out to collect eggs, and let them out of their coop, and say good morning, I usually come with treats to give them (last nights left overs, etc). I have only had my hens for a week, but it seems they are used to this and...
