Stymied by Fox, Coyote, coon, possum.......

I free range my birds. I have noticed a pretty sharp decline.... from over 100 to around 50-60, and eggs are being stolen as well.... lots of eggs. My birds free range, and have come into the garage to sleep at night with the dogs. Did I mention I have lots of dogs? Apparently, they don't like...

Farm Marketing and Profits from a Natural perspective

Why do people have Chickens? Many here have them as ornamental pets. That is a wonderful thing because I believe that chickens are beautiful quirky birds. Others serve that market. Some raise them to strict standards of the breed searching for the perfect genetics and creating the perfect...

    I feel like a traitor!

The last couple of days have been tough on me friends. I raise pigs for my family and friends/customers. I understand that I raise them differently than institutions, and I tell myself that they have wonderful lives with 1 bad day.... but.... I raised them from when they were young, and when I...

    Marketing your chickens

How do you market you birds? I am kind of excited as I placed an ad on CL in a city an hour away from me for eggs. I have one lady that says she can supply me with egg orders @ about 25 to 30 dozen every 2 weeks and another guy wants 2 dozen per week, but ordered a dozen birds from me.

16% protein hog feed for meaties

I have a friend that sourced 16% protein hog feed at 16 cents per lb and raised his birds on it. 74 days and weighed out fine. I am considering it as the withdrawal feed I use is only 18% and costs 25 cents lb. On 100 birds using a ton of food, that is a $140.00 savings. Thoughts?

    Thumbs up button

I have been to many sites that have something similar, kind of like a reputation button. Some people set a lot of store to them. I don't notice very many here, of course maybe I hang around unsavory characters Anyhow, sometimes I use that thumbs up button rather than respond to the post if I...

No Nonsense, chickens are livestock, advise. Tell me like it is.

I am looking for advise. I started raising chickens 2 years ago. I have learned so much from this site and appreciate learning from the lifetime experiences of those who have lived what I am endeavoring. Some of the things I have learned on here would have taken me years to learn by trial and...

Are we allowed to complain without getting banned?

The best thread I have ever seen on this forum has just been locked because someone placed disparaging remarks, and people being people, commented on it, quite mildly in my humble opinion. I have learned SO MUCH from this site, and I don't want to be suspended..... Lord, I feel like I am in 3rd...

Technical question about the space between the pelvic bones.

This might seem like a dumb question, but..... When feeling for finger space between the pelvic bones for egg laying capabilities, I am supposed to feel between them horizontally, like figers between their legs only further back correct? I have some culling to do and want to make sure that I am...

Well here goes.... First time incubating!

Took the plunge and bought a used incubator and egg turner. It's a Hovabator 58 something I think. The previous owner installed a new thermostat and it holds right at about 101 degrees. I have a hydrometer that I will put in it here soon. Last night 08/25/2011 I put in 22 eggs so we'll see what...
