Thanks, but I think it would be a battle that we would not win. Going from 4 to 6 was probably already a bit step for Nanaimo City Council. I will be happy if they don't rescind the by-law... I wonder if they get many complaints about the backyard chickens?
Nice to hear from everyone in and around Nanaimo!! We are a growing group of backyard chicken keepers, yippee! Islandgal99, that's a lot of chickens -- we are only allowed 6 in Nanaimo.
I'm getting really sick of the flies -- anyone have any solutions for that?
Also, there is a facebook page...
I like chickens a lot more than cats - way more interesting and the eggs! My neighbours cat always poops in my garden - my chickens don't do that :)
Sure do wish the by-law would be upped to 10 chickens here in the city. It's hard to keep good production with just 6 and now with one gone I...
We live in Nanaimo - right now I have 5 chickens. A gold laced cochin, a wyndotte, one unknown and 2 sussex cross. My wyndotte was broody last year so we gave her 3 eggs to sit on (3 different breeds) - sadly all were roosters which we cannot keep in the city, so I gave them all away.

Here is the beak bump and bare neck. The beak bump as been there over 2 weeks and seems to stay the same. The bare neck is getting larger. Any ideas? Thanks.
Has anyone ever just used an injection to put a chicken down (euthanasia)? I have an old bird that I would like to get rid of, she's not laying and certainly not edible as she's so boney. I was wondering about getting some kind of injection, same way you put a dog or cat down. Seems very...
I forgot to buy the chocolate but I did buy peanut butter and will try that tonight. My daughter says it's almost as fun as fishing :) I thought that was pretty funny.
For rats or mice we use chocolate. I use little metal bowls or deep lids we happened to have laying around. I pour in a nice portion of chocolate chips.
OK, that's a new one!! Gonna try that tonight! Thanks.
My dog is about the size of the rats :) (toy poodle) and we have allergies so cats are definately not an option. Have just caught #2! He was going after the roast beef fat... hoping for more results this morning.
I found a fairly strait tree branch and put it about 2 feet up, its around 2" in diameter but tapers. I mount it so it is removeable for bigger cleaning times.
I was so excited when I caught that rat, and then I saw another one by my hot tub yesterday... they are so big and healthy. There is a bird feeder there - sorry birds, no more food. I have set 2 traps and a bucket with corn and dog food floating around just below a nice ledge where they can...
