Oh if only I could hatch more chickies this year. I am in Alaska and the care you took packing eggs was excellent. The eggs arrived in great condition and I had a great hatch.
I love the feeling of having what we need. Even if the road closes we have eggs and milk. Even if the plane doesn't fly and the boats cannot come into port...Valdez is one of those places ...having a back up is always good.
Valdez is moderate but, very rainy and snowy. We had low temps of 0 F this winter. We have lots of variation because we are coastal. I am hoping to move up from sea level a bit ...better for farming. We had 368 inches of snow or something crazy like that!! We still have piles of snow around us.
Megan, My Nigerian Dwarfs are about 40-55 lbs. They are very hardy and very low upkeep. I have not seen a pygmy that I know of to compare with but, I grew up with Nubians. They were wonderful but much larger goats. Nigerians and Nubians both have the most butter fat in terms of amount of fat...
I did find out that the babies I have are Belgian Quail D'Anvers. I am really happy. I have three and sure hope two hens and roo. That might be wayee too much to ask for since last spring when I hatched birds I ended up with like four to one roos!! Crazy odds. Maybe this is my year for...
I just made the first batch of homemade strawberry icemilk. Icecream out of the goat's milk instead of cream. The milk i have is very high in dairy fat so it is yummy. My husband has made two batches of cheese. It is very good too. We just have to find the time to do it more.
We have two girls in milk now and are getting two quarts per day total. This ends up being three gallons a week. For our small family needs it is more than enough. I did buy from good dairy stock and my girls both still have their kids on them for seven hours day. All things considered. I...
Thank YOU for the big welcome. Really do appreciate it. I am in Valdez, Ak. We have many chickens and eight Nigerian dwarf dairy goats. We are up to our eyeballs in fresh milk and eggs and could not be happier. I currently have Orpingtons, Silkies, D'Anvers (peeps), Bantam and Giant...
I really think it depends on the roos. I have A Silkie Roo and Bantam Cochin roo in the same pen. I have had two Silkie roos successfully in the same pen as well.
We used deep litter last year in AK. We did do full clean out earlier than we expected...snow late on the year pushed us over the edge ...worked fine until now .
