Post if you have chicks right now and/or waiting for some.

I put in my first (ever) order of mail order chicks on Wednesday thru Ideal. I've always loved the look of cochins with their big, fluffy bloomers! I requested all pullets which should ship out on March 11th. 2 Black Cochins 2 Partridge Cochins 2 Gold Laced Cochins 2 Silver Laced Cochins 4...

SouthEast Michigan: Where can you raise chickens and where can you not

The "Right To Farm Law" holds up in MI. It does supercede all ordinances. It doesn't mean neighbors/city officials, etc. won't try to hassle you, it does mean you are well within your rights to have backyard chickens if you live in MI.

    First-timer/Meatie questions

I have the opportunity to purchase some day old Cornish X Rock pullets. This will be my first time raising meat chickens. The number of chicks I get will depend on how large of an area will they need to grow out. I have to build a hutch/tractor type structure for them outside with an enclosed...

    Rooster? and advice needed *PIX*

Quote: I'll do this. I have one cranky neighbor who was not happy to hear I was getting chickens. Everyone else was fine with it, not to mention the fact that I'm always offering fresh eggs. The cranky one takes the eggs but always has to make a comment like "They better not stink" or "They...

    Rooster? and advice needed *PIX*

Quote: I purchased him as a Light Brahma. Some nice folks on the board later explained to me that he is, in fact, a mix. I don't know what he might be mixed with because he was supposed to be a straight LB. I don't have enough experience with the variety and characteristics of other breeds to...

    Rooster? and advice needed *PIX*

This is Daisy/Duke. D is 20 weeks old and lives with a flock of 10 ladies. D hasn't crowed or tried to mate even though the girls are squatting for me. I think I see saddle feathers, but when I pick D up and look at the feathers individually, they appear roundish but some of the black markings...

Just for fun...guess the sex of this grey silkie.

When I was asking about the sex of my Silkie, someone mentioned "the body shape resembled a pullet"...and just by comparing pics, yours looks remarkably like mine. This is my girl at 8 weeks. I'm guessing pullet. With all the different answers, it's a good thing you'll be happy with either...

    Laying eggs w/o squatting?

I have an EE who doesn't like me within 5 feet of her. She started laying @ 29 weeks 2 days...no squatting. Everyone else does and did squat. I think squatting may mean a combination of things; submission, readiness to breed, and an invitation to a rooster...Regardless of what it means, my hens...
