The Girls Should Love this One

This is a joke that came to me a while ago. I have been wanting to put it on for a while. Please be nice and laugh, okay!? What is the difference between a woman and a hen? When a hen pecks you, you don't always bleed!

    Questions for Finch keepers

Hello: thinking about getting some zebras. No breeding for now. So i would get two or three same sexers, i guess. Kept indoors only--I am in MA! SUMMER: Upstairs room with no AC. In summer can get pretty warm up there. 80s for sure at times. Two windows in room. Could windows be opened...

Does anyone have experience with Brown Leghorns?

like are they over the top nervous? they are so beautiful and such great layers that they are pretty tempting............. I have experience with very nervous birds: Khaki Campbell ducks. So I am not new to neurotics, and I know very well how after time birds that are nervous can really calm...

Poop boards filled w/sand must be super heavy!

I would need a 'sandbox' about 40 inches by 8 ft.!! that would weigh alot, even with a bit of sand. moreover, my birds would go down in it and scratch. It would be interesting to hear more about people who use sand-filled poop boards: maybe pictures.......... do their birds enjoy...

Hen aprons not meant to be worn all the time

At least according to Gail Damerow, and I think she makes her point.... They are better for a temporary use, as they make it impossible for a hen to preen properly for one thing. Can hinder a real good dust bath. Edges (esp. above the tail) could possibly abrade incoming feathers or impede...

10 Embryos Dead at Day 7 Candling: Yikes!!

I am surprised to have so many early conker-outers. Some were bacterial obviously. Some do not 'appear' to be bacterial. Has anyone ever had alot quit early on like this? I had 48 going..................

The descendants of a hatchery strain of RIR--not show birds. Hatched on May 20-21, 2012 13 are available. There are a couple RIR x Light Brahma chicks among the 13. All will be good layers. The father (RIR) of all the chicks is a sweetheart, btw.................. You may also call...

Cleaning a PVC/Nipple watering system must be a Pain!!

It is a heck of alot easier to clean out a big rubber bowl than to have to take apart and clean the inside of a 1" pvc pipe, not to mention getting the guts of a nipple clean. Right? This misery holds me back from even venturing into such a system......................

40 pounds of pellets, and TEN pounds of DUST!

I am sick of the amount of 'feed dust' that a 50 lb. bag of pellets has. The birds don't know what to do with this 'crumby dust'. I try to recycle it day after day, by putting the previous day's 'dust' on top of the new day's feed. But this amount of leftover 'feed dust' just keeps...

Bit of blood on Brahma legs...mites?

or maybe it is just a result of having weird feathers coming out of their legs. Seems to be associated with the area where the shaft comes out of the leg. They are not all affected, usually only one................then sometimes another NOTE, the "RIRs" I have never ever show blood spots...

How many coops should an aspiring breeder have?

Issues: 1. Need a place for babies to grow out 2. Need a place to have roosters live in, either permanently, or on a rotational basis. Further, if roosters fight alot, this may require even more housing........ 3. Need a main laying house...........Should this ideally be separate from...

Hens keep pecking/opening roos comb and wattles

Drives me a bit crazy, too. He sort of puts up with it (But of course, they put up with him walking on their backs, lol) He has scabs on his comb and wattles (due to frostbite and beating up a rooster we no longer have) and they keep getting pecked at and opened again and again. He just...

accurite thermom/hygrom damaged by incubator heat?

It seems that the three accurite thermom.-hygrom.s that i place in the incubators for humidity data have been DAMAGED by the heat of the bators. all i can say is that, following salt testing (the usefulness of which i am beginning to question...), and comparing the humidity readings of the...

Having problem with late term embryo death

I am having some troubles with very late term embryo death. Unpipped internally or externally. Egg tooth formed Yolk sac not all absorbed. This has been a regular feature for me. Not always, but enough to bug me. I think it might be omphalitis invading the navel and killing these...

Bunny rabbit as 'flock protector' ?

Now don't laugh, cmon! Seriously, suppose you had one of those big kinda rabbits that don't have rabbity ears but floppy ones. Those big rabbits like the size of a coon which are harmless (and defenseless) but are big and may give a number of predators second thoughts if they saw it in the...
