    Processing Station Plans

Our setup is almost identical to PotterWatch. I agree that it's important to separate the plucking area from the eviscerating area. The one slight change we have is that when the chickens come out of the plucker, we throw them in a feed trough full of ice water. This helps cool the bird down...

4lb or more finished carcass bird?

I just raised 25 Freedom Rangers. I processed at 8.5 weeks and averaged just under 4 lbs. I fed 21% protein flock raiser.

    Eating muscovy ducks?

The waxing gets out the pin feathers that won't come out with the plucking. The pin feathers nearly covered the breast on the ducks we processed.

    Eating muscovy ducks?

I did not save the feathers. I plucked only because I had the whole setup ready to go for the chickens--and am hoping the skin is good. Glad to hear you think the meat is worth the effort.

    Eating muscovy ducks?

I processed 10 Muscovies this weekend. They were 8.5-9.5 weeks old. The drakes had a processed weight of about 6.5 lbs and and hens were closer to 4.0. We have a Featherman plucker and scalding tank. We also waxed the bids to get pin feathers off. We did the ducks at the end of a day where...

    Bay Area BYCers!

We are raising a couple meat chickens for the fall. I was wondering if anyone knew of a place in the Bay Area to rent a plucker? I have found them for rent in a number of places, but nothing closer than 3 hours away.

    Bay Area BYCers!

Thanks all for the replies. I had purchased 2 Black stars and 2 red stars. I'm flexible in breeds. I'm interested in Orpingtons, Marans, Ameraucana, but I am also interested in some of the more "rare" breeds--Icleandics, Isbars, maybe some bantams. I'm located in the middle of Silicon Valley.

    Bay Area BYCers!

Hello all. So happy to see such a vibrant and friendly community focused on the Bay Area. I am looking for some help. I recently acquired some pullets from a guy on CraigsList. They all had mycoplasma in addition to slight cross beak. I had to cull the flock and am in the process of starting...

New chickens are coughing...with video for aided diagnosis

Just to update the thread and bring some closure. We had to cull the chickens this weekend. It was harder emotionally than I expected. Cleaned out and sanitized the coop and hoping to start over with some new hens soon. Looking for good breeders in the Bay Area if anyone has any recommendations.

New chickens are coughing...with video for aided diagnosis

Thanks so much for the help. The chickens seem to be doing better so far. I am going to give them a week and see how they do. I'll post to the thread with updates.

New chickens are coughing...with video for aided diagnosis

Thanks for the lengthy and honest reply. I think my concern is that besides the sneezing (Though coughing seems like a possibly more accurate description), I am not seeing much if any discharge--which I believed was a very common symptom of Mycoplasm. I'll cull if it's the right thing to do...

New chickens are coughing...with video for aided diagnosis

I recently purchased 4 six month old hens for a new coop. The hens came from a guy on Craigslist. I got 2 red stars and 2 black stars. We were really excited to be living in a place where we could have them--my first time with chickens since I was a child. They are coughing quite a bit and...
