I just raised 25 Freedom Rangers. I processed at 8.5 weeks and averaged just under 4 lbs. I fed 21% protein flock raiser.

The waxing gets out the pin feathers that won't come out with the plucking. The pin feathers nearly covered the breast on the ducks we processed.

I did not save the feathers. I plucked only because I had the whole setup ready to go for the chickens--and am hoping the skin is good. Glad to hear you think the meat is worth the effort.

Just to update the thread and bring some closure. We had to cull the chickens this weekend. It was harder emotionally than I expected. Cleaned out and sanitized the coop and hoping to start over with some new hens soon. Looking for good breeders in the Bay Area if anyone has any recommendations.
