Well, it spent the night inside under a heat lamp - still alive this morning which I wasn't really expecting .... No pooping, still will not eat or drink on its own. I did get another dropper of antibiotic and sugar water down. Not worse, maybe a tiny bit better - still making the motion of...
No, it is distressed rather than lonely. After sitting here watching it for an hour, I think it is having problems breathing and actually gasping for air. Poor little guy does not look good.
The silkies were out free ranging today when I found this little guy sitting off by itself making an uncomfortable sound. I brought it in and it has just kept up with the crying - sounds a little like a strangled crow. No obvious injuries.
It's about two months old and hasn't really thrived...
This was my first winter with chickens and I'm working out how to compost with chicken-leavings. I have a combination of straw and pine shavings in the coops and runs. Used bedding goes to a "compost pile" which basically means I'm stacking it up in the corner of the yard and hoping it...
Depends ... silkies can have an open skull which can be subject to pecking. Silkies are (by definitian) bantam (small) chickens. Chickens can be size sensattive - and color selective. Birds of a feather really do flock together
I completed two 25 mile endurance rides last year on a Paso Fino. We were top 10 at our second ride, which was over an extreamly tough course with a 4000ft elevation change. Years ago I competed on an Appaloosa/Quarter Horse. I am also 180# and said Paso was under 15h.
You do *NOT* need an...
They are both almost 5 months old. We had 6 and the "chief roo" was clearly a roo. Saddle feathers, crowing, mounting roo-bird. 3 others had distinctive saddle feathers, but no crowing. Those four left about 10 days ago, bird 1 started crowing about a week after that. Goobers. I think you...
Last of our 6 "pullets" - 4 roos already dispatched to freezer camp, really hoping we have one lady here, but I'm just not sure. Someone out there is crowing, I haven't caught them yet but I suspect it is Bird 1. What do you think? Anyone in Washington need a roo-giant?
Bird 1:
Bird 2...
I have a group of silkies I moved outside a few weeks ago. They transitioned from a "chick-waterer" to a big-hen water dish. I have one little hen that can't stay out of the water dish. I don't know if she thinks she is fishing, or just wants to say hi to the silkie in the reflection, or...
My DH has been very supportive (enabling) of my chicken addiction, so when he said he wanted some "man sized" chickens we bought him 6 Jersey Giant chicks this spring. They have started to crow & all (!) of them look like roosters, so they are currently seeking new homes.
I would really like...
We will be going to the show & I'm looking for hatching eggs. Is there anyone coming who can bring Blue/Splash Orpington or Paint Silkie hatching eggs? I would also like to add some nice blue eggs to the egg basket - either hatching eggs or a nice friendly Ameraucana pullet/hen?
If anyone is...
I am looking for local hatching eggs for the incubator to hatch some fall chicks for spring sales and having mixed luck with shipped eggs. LF chickens only, prefer pure breed birds but not against barnyard mix.
Wanting to pickup locally, can meet between Longview/Kelso area and Kent/South...
We have 6 Jersey Giant pullets (?) about 3 months old. 1 of them has developed with a tail that is clearly different than the others. The black giant below has a very upright and pronounced tail. The other five have smaller "flatter" tails like the blue below. The difference was noticible...
