    Dogs Attacked Chicken---Now Two Missing

Yesterday my dogs attacked one of my hens. I got her away and brought her to the coop only for her to run away. Now she and another hen are missing. Obviously they were scared by the dog attack and ran to hide. But now they won't come back. Any suggestions on how to find them?

    Lone Surviving Chick

I had 4 eggs hatch...only 1 survived. I've been looking for a "friend" for the lone chick because I know they're not supposed to be alone, but it's taken me about a week to find others around that age. Because this chick is used to being alone will he be antisocial with the new chicks? I'm...

    Newly Hatched Chicks

One of my hens has been broody and we were pretty sure none of the eggs were going to hatch. But last night we found two new baby chicks (and one dead one). I wasn't sure how to get the food and water into the nest box where the chicks could reach them, so I decided to separate the chicks into...

    Introducing New Chickens

I have 5 one year old chickens. I recently obtained two more one year old chickens to add to my flock. What is the best way to go about combining the seven birds? Currently the two new birds are in the run and the others are in the coop/free ranging. Should I let them be separated but near...

How to Move a Broody Hen

We have three chickens who are identical and all share a favorite nesting box. Because of that it took us awhile to realize one of our hens went broody. So...we have no idea when she started brooding. I'd like to candle the eggs to make sure they're developing, but when I tried to move her...

    Broody Hen Help

I've read that broody hens may die from not eating or drinking. I have not noticed my broody hen eating or drinking, but I also am not down there 24/7. How should I handle this? Is there a way to ensure she is eating and drinking?

    Overly Curved Beak

My 4-5 week old gold laced wyandotte has a very curved beak. She almost looks part eagle. It doesn't seem to bother her at all. She is healthy and active. I just want to make sure it's not something that will negatively affect her later on. Is there any harm in her having this?

    New Jubilee Orpington Owner

I am now the proud owner of some new jubilee orpington chicks. I am very excited. They are from Greenfire Farm stock. I would love to hear from other jubilee owners to see how wonderful these birds are.

    Jubilee Orpingtons

I am debating adding a few jubilee orpingtons to my flock. I am looking for information regarding their temperament. Are they as docile as other orpingtons? Does anyone have pics of theirs?

    No Movement at Day 18

I candled last night (day 17) and didn't see any movement, although it did look like there was something growing in the eggs. I'm wondering if they stopped growing or if it's possible not to see movement at all. Also, I am taking them out of the egg turner today for lockdown. Do I just put...

    Fox Ate Half my Flock...

Will the fox remember forever that he got chickens in my yard? I love letting my chickens free range, but obviously not if they're getting eaten! So now I'm worried that I won't ever be able to let them free range again...

    Set Eggs Upside Down...HELP!

We began our first incubation 10 days ago. We are going to candle them all tonight, but as of a couple of days ago the ones we candled were growing. Now (after reading more on backyard chickens) I realized that we set the eggs wrong! We put the small end up instead of the large end. Is it too...

Does anyone know of anywhere in NH (or near by) that does chicken processing? I tried Lemay's but they do not process chickens. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks!

    Food mishap

I ran out of duckling food today and had to give them egg layer food for the day. Is that harmful if just eaten once?

    Sick or Molting?

My hens lost a lot of feathers due to having too many roosters (which have since gone to the dinner table). They were still all acting completely normal and laying tons of eggs. Recently egg production has dropped significantly and we noticed one of the hens having diarrhea. After that the...

How to Keep Duckling Pen Dry

I have year old ducks and chickens, but recently got two more ducklings that are approximately a month old. Since we got them at two days old, we have been trying our hardest to keep the brooder dry. I know they're ducks and want to be wet, but the bedding gets soaked immediately no matter...

    Shelless Egg then Dead Chicken

This morning when I went to feed and water my chickens I found one of my buff orpington hens (8 months old) laying dead on the ground. Yesterday she, and all the others, appeared completely normal. Her death this morning was a complete shock. However, yesterday my husband did find a...

    Blood On Duck Egg

I have an approximately 6 month old Indian Runner duck. She has been laying for about 1 1/2 months and there has never been an issue. Today my husband found one of her eggs with blood smeared all over the outside of the shell. She is eating, drinking, and acting normally. Is this something...

How Long Are Eggs Good For?

I know that you can do the old water test to see how fresh an egg is, but in general, how long do people think our chicken's eggs stay good for (refrigerated)?
