    Staggering Buff Orp

Well, she has not gotten any better so today she was dispatched. Gave her a hug and told her she had been a good chicky. Now buried with bricks over the spot to keep the critters out.

    Staggering Buff Orp

Never been wormed before. She's about one year old. Nope does not stand at all. Lately she's just been nestled down in the shavings or in the nesting box. If she went out still found a place to crouch down. Never been vaccinated for anything that I know of. No new birds in the flock. I have...

    Staggering Buff Orp

One of my Buff Orpingtons seems to be coming down with something. Looks like the other girls are pecking on her and perhaps pulling feathers out. She is now totally lethargic, staggers around when she tries to walk and cannot get up on the roost. She's been sleeping in one of the lower...

What treat did your chickies get today?

Mine got a batch of left over biscuits and some hash browns from the church breakfast. They didn't eat the grits I gave them last time so they didn't get any today. I usually let my girls out around 4:30 pm to free range before bed time at around 7:30 - 8:00. Depending on what we had for...

    Help with Waterers

I'm using one of those Farm Tuff waterer and hate it. Had two of them a guy sold me for $5. Threw one against the wall and broke it cause it leaked so bad. Right now I'm having to use the other one and fill it often. Gonna get some of those horizontal nipples and make me a waterer like shown.

    Paprika?? Does it work?

I put a little chlorine bleach in my waterers to keep the algea growth away. Gets really hot here in Ga and green stuff gets in the water fast. I had also heard to sprinkle DE *(food grade) on the food to act as a wormer.

When do Buff Orpingtons start laying?

My 4 Buffs are around 20-23 weeks or so. Got the from the feed store so not sure how old they were. I'm finding one egg daily from the 4 (that's the only one I'm finding) and the egg is a very small one. My Reds are laying nice large brown eggs but the blondes are small. The finally started...

Problems with plastic 5 gal water bucket

This is one of those with the screw off top that looks like a handle. I got two of these from a friend the other day for $5. One seems to be working fine. Screwed on the cap, filled the jug with the hose, put the top back on tight, took off the little cap and it filled the drinking area. The...

    Turning shed into coop

One of the things I did for the chicken side of my shed was to floor it with old newspaper printing plates. These are thin aluminum roughly 3x3. I buy them 3 for $1. at the newspaper office and just nailed them down using roofing nails. Makes it really easy to clean up the wheat straw. I'm...

Train a chicken to lay eggs in certain place?

The squatting and dancing are submissive behavior to the rooster. I just pat mine on the back a little and they wander off somewhere.

Can chickens stand the cold weather?

Down here in GA. it has been down in the 30's and lots of rain lately. My RI Reds won't go inside their coop but instead hop on the top and roost on the flat roof. Cold does not seem to be bothering them at all. I put heavy plastic on the roof to make it easier to scrape the poop off in the...

    Behavior

Well my 6 girls (RIR) are doing well, but a couple of things puzzle me. They have a nice little coop with two perches on either end with enough room for 3 on a perch comfortably. I have shavings and pine straw on the floor but the girls would rather stay outside on top of the coop even tho...

    Hawks :(

I have 6 RI Reds and they free range all day. I put them up when it starts getting dark (usually they are already in the coop). Heard a lot of squawking the other day and saw a hawk pulling out of his dive. i yelled and waved my arms and it flew away. The girls had run to hide under the...

19 and a half weeks old and still no eggs :( egg countdown anyone??

I have 4 RIRs and got 2 in March and 2 in April. I have put golf balls in the laying boxes and find that they push them out and bury them in the coop. Still no eggs that I can find. I let them out during the day for a bit but keep an eye on them. Been hot and humid here in Ga so not sure if...

    feeding sprouts, grass alternative?

My girls are used to me cutting some weeds in the afternoon and feeding them. They also like it when I stick grass through the wire and let them pull it. I usually use some trimming clippers and cut the grass up to feed them. When they see me coming they cluster by the fence waiting to be fed.

when to put in the nest boxes

I have 4 RIRs and when I built the coop, I added the boxes then. I used kitty litter rectangular buckets and cut the tops out and screwed them to the back of the coop. They have a roost across from the boxes but have not used them yet. I feed my girls tomatoes, etc from the garden and then...

    Signing in From Georgia

Just joined up to learn more about my Rhode Island Reds. I have 4 of them (no roosters). Just waiting for eggs now. I got 2 in March and 2 more in late April. They love it when I bring them grass in the evening, and they have been enjoying squash, and tomatoes from the garden. They also...
