    Genetic Saxony question

Have 2 Saxony ducks with standard colorations. Two of their off springs are pure white, like pekins . Can find no pics online of white Saxonys. If anyone has Saxony ducks, is this normal? Could the white male possibly throw a standard looking chick or only white?

Eating farm eggs vs. store eggs over easy

I have been giving a friend duck eggs for a few months and just last week her husband got very ill after eating them. I was shocked, as I've been eating duck eggs for 7 years with no ill effects. But apparently he was eating them 'over easy' with a runny yolk. My sister, who has had...

    Broody & Genetic Questions

I have one duck that I know goes broody. She is in a pen with 3 other females who are also laying. I have several nest boxes but they all seem to wait in line to lay in the same box! If I don't separate her, what are the chances that she will go broody? If a duck went broody once, is it...

    Old lame duck

I have an older pekin who is about 6-7 years old. She is quite lame and her feet now turn in a bit so she trips over them. She uses her wings, which are a bit mangled now, and beak on the ground to steady herself after so many steps. /she can get around when she wants to. She stays in one...

    Duck laying at 5 months

I read that ducks should not start laying until they are 6 months old. Laying earlier can cause leg issues, small eggs (and they sure are small), and overall poor health down the road. Do I need to be concerned? Will my Campbell's eggs get a bit larger as time goes on? Is there anything I can...

    Vaccines for ducks

I have 11 ducks in 3/4 acres of land. I try to maintain a clean environment, but we do have some sparrows that search their coop for food. In my reading, it was recommended that ducks in general get vaccinated. My questions are: does anyone out there vaccinate their ducks? If so, what do...

4 new ducklings - first time experience for me!

!Wow! What an experience this was - exciting. I have always purchased ducklings from the feed store, and there is a lot of work entailed in keeping them clean and happy. It is so much easier letting mama do the job; she is better at it too! Tee hee hee. I tried to determine their sex ... all...

Oh BoyBroody runner may have hatchlings soon but...

Just wondered. My runner has 4 eggs that were laid at different times. I can't candle worth a darn, so I'm relying on feel. Two of the eggs have activity but the oldest egg --nothing. Originally when I candled them, they all looked viable but now I wonder if the oldest egg (which was laid on...

    Runner sitting on viable eggs!

I was away for 7 days and my helper did not collect the eggs. Upon returning, I found my runner duck determined to hatch her clutch; she hardly ever leaves the nest. After candling the eggs, I am sure that there are at least 3 viable eggs growing chicks. Here is my question: If by some...

Fertilized eggs vs unfertilized eggs refrigerated

This is my first year with a mated pair, so I have some fertilized eggs. My questions are: 1) by putting fertilized eggs in the refrigerator, does this retard growth or stop it completely? 2) do refrigerated fertilized eggs have a shorter shelf life then unfertilized eggs? If so what is...

    Duck foot fustration!

I have 3 Pekins about 4 years old . One had bramble foot and cost me an absurd amount of $ with vet and antibiotics to heal --she is fine. My other 2 ducks now have severe limps and have several of these callouses or what appears to be Bramble foot callouses . I just don't understand it...

    Duck Procreation

I have 2 ducks ages 5 & 6.5 Months, who have started mating. I have read that males can get over zelous and can hurt the female if they mate too often. What I need to know is....how many times a day is viewed as to much? They mate only in the pool and, if the female is not willing, she can...

    Limpy Gimpy Pekins

I have 3 pekins about 4 years old. My first trip to the vet cost me $700 to repair a suspected racoon bite to my Pekin's foot--visits, xrays, bandages, and medication. I have a second Pekin that gets around ok, but she just started limping about 4 months ago, having no visible signs of an...
