    the problem with the heat lamp is the chickens cannot tolerate power outages. maybe u have better utilities than me ,but we always have 1-2 power out a winter with storms. would rather have my chicks acclimated than worry

    Oh I am also using straw bales as windbreaks this winter outside my run

    I use both. I use shavings for the main floor areas of the coops because it seems to stay drier and is easy to clean. I use straw in the nesting boxes and throw flakes of straw in secluded corners because the hens and pullets like to rest on it and lay eggs.

    just be careful of corners with all that huddleing. we almost lost a roo to the bottom of the pile in a corner. luck we found him before to late, but he was unresponsive when we unburied him. had to be our kitchen rooster for awhile till he recovered. we almost lost him

    I just introduced 8 week old hens to older flock. First put in wire next 2 big ladies,then cut wire between so littles can scoot back if it gets too extreme. Only had to remove one(little roo) d/t bloody pecks .he spent 2 days in kitchen so we now call him k.c. (kitchen chicken). he is now back...
