OOOh sorry my tone was a little nippy there ...
seriously though I was told to remove vent sexing pictures on another U.S forum as they were too graphic and causing to much upset ... so now I try to play it safe.
Yes of course I was joking Niki, I'm not a complete novice when it comes to poultry & quail and actually earned money whilst at college working with turkey inseminators at our local producers ... I just didn't think the subject warranted such a graphic description of me fiddling with my birds as...
I've said before on this forum that places like 'Strombergs' wouldn't be allowed to advertise such birds commercially without being able to prove the DNA/Heritage of the said birds (Trades description Act) in the UK.

I use precision digital kitchen scales. I velcro'd an ice-cream carton to the scales and set it to zero to make it easier weighing those quail that wont stay still long enough to take a reading.

Standard Strains (I dont keep anything under 8oz @ 8wks)
Cock birds at optimum culling weight @ 7-8 weeks ... 8 - 8 1/2 oz...

You could try using a light weight broody bantam chicken...
I personally would dispose of all cracked eggs you are at risk contaminating all your eggs and ruining your entire batch
I have used the candle wax & nail polish tip before but only on eggs that were later into development that I have accidentally damaged ... with varying degrees of success...
Stumpy the Gambel Cock (got his name cos a BW chick nicked off a toe)
these were taken yesterday ...
this is just a small selection ... if any of them are of use just let me know and I'll send you the originals.

breeding range (Tibetan) to white will give you a mix of range, white & tuxedo chicks.
The only reliable way to sex these colours is to vent sex them ... http://www.coturnixcorner.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=14

Sam - sorry I get get muddled up who I know from where - are you PACoturnix from TQP? If so you haven't signed up to the new improved CC Forum .... link is at the bottom lol
Texas A&M's
Fifteen years ago Experiment Station researchers and Extension poultry science specialists sought to improve the quail industry by genetically enhancing the blood lines of selected heavier meat birds. The resulting Texas A&M Gourmet Quail were developed by Extension specialists...
