Official BYC Poll: Why Do You Have Chickens - Select All That Apply

Your Charlie looks a bit like my George. George is considered an Easter Egger instead of an Ameraucana. People that raise Ameraucanas get upset when you confuse an EE for an Ameraucana. I have 10 EE's and love them.

What time do chickens lay eggs??

My first 6 chickens would lay eggs in the coop but roost in a tree at night. Since then, I've learned to put them in the coop at night and after a few times they learn that is home. Also, chickens detect light before humans do, that is why the roosters crow before it is light out. I think, as...

If you love your chickens, fence them in

I free range but close them in at night. I lost some to a neighbors coyote/husky cross. But after 3 years, I haven't had much trouble. My Roosters spot the hawks and vultures and give a warning cry/growl, and the chickens run for cover, I have plenty of cover for the chickens. Keeping them...

Official BYC Poll: Why Do You Have Chickens - Select All That Apply

I didn't plan on chickens, but I had discussed it with my wife as a good chore for the kids. She was totally against it. But, my Mother in Law heard about my idea and the kids got surprised with 3 leghorns and 3 RR chicks for Easter. (I have the best Mother in Law.) 2 1/2 years later and I'm...

It's been a rough 3 weeks for my homesteading aspirations

A Biblical story about saving during times of plenty is proof that Farmers are failures? I don't believe I am educated enough to follow that logic. And I won't bore other readers with continuing this discussion.

It's been a rough 3 weeks for my homesteading aspirations

All Farmers Fail? That sounds harsh. You eat because Farmers are successful. All Farmers have bad days, but they keep working and get over the bad days. I don't know any failures and I grew up surrounded by Farms and Farmers.

I'm guilty of trying to plan things, but mostly to conserve excess purchases. Be proud of your ability to create and adapt, those are talents also. very nice coop.

I love my EE's, I don't care if they aren't a true breed, they lay great looking eggs.

Help, chicken in nesting box all day?

Get some fertile eggs and stuff under her. It is so cool to see the chicks running around with the hen. I have a broody right now and the other hens squeeze into the nest with her to lay eggs. (Even though there are plenty of other nest boxes.) She does leave the nest to eat, so I leave water...

It's been a rough 3 weeks for my homesteading aspirations

I thought I was the only person that couldn't get rabbits to breed. Someone told me to breed on a full moon, and for the past 7 years it has seemed to work. As for the other things, I grew up on a small farm, and everyday is fixing something. And you'll learn, animals die. It's up to you...

Every Pet owner should read this, especially those with large breed dogs

In the 70's we lived in the Northern part of Michigan and people would park at trash dumps in the evening to watch the Bears come out and scavenge. One night a man got out of his car with his toddler and was going to stand next to a bear with his kid while the wife took pictures. Thank God...

How do I help my chickens in Excessive HEAT?

I used to work at a large scale poultry farm and the only thing they ever did was run fans. I personally have plastic snow sleds I put in the shade with 2 inches of water in them and they stand in those. Or I just run water on the ground in the spots puddles normally form, I have heavy clay so...

    Who's the Daddy?

We got him when I went to checkout a craigslist add offering "free" chickens. My wife had said "NO" roosters, but I couldn't resist, I had never seen a rooster like that. But, my wife knows any animal that is mean or aggressive and I get rid of it quick. The Guinea that came with the small flock...

    Who's the Daddy?

My avatar is the Rooster I want to breed my Ameraucanas to. He was given to me a year ago, supposedly less than a year old then. I don't know enough about the difference between Easter Eggers and Ameraucanas to claim pure bred anything. The other Rooster is a Russian Orloff and just a year old...

    Who's the Daddy?

I have 2 Roosters. Today I separated 1 rooster and 7 hens for breeding purposes. But, if my research is correct. The 2nd roosters sperm maybe present in some of my hens for up to 2 weeks. My question is... will a chicken store the old sperm when having a new donor? I had separated the group...

Supposed to be pure breed Ameraucana.

This is a picture of some Ameraucana chicks from last year. The comb looks about the same. I have read in the past that black legs are acceptable on black Ameraucanas. Some ended up with beards and muffs and other combinations and some just have the pea comb. I have only had this breed for a...
