Mine will fly up to the top of the coop some times so no problems reaching the upper box. I'm always surprised how high they jump with little flapping. They're fairly heavy birds too. Rock/Orpington crosses.
We put up a pretty good fence and mesh screening to keep out the riffraff. The only pests I've had to worry about so far are neighborhood dogs taking too much interest in their run and a raven or crow every now and then waiting to sweep up whatever scratch they miss. I haven't seen many lately...
Oh yeah I just yesterday collected a few pounds of seaweed to try out as a vitamin mineral supplement and the ladies love it! I also added some peanuts to their scratch cuz 5 lb. bags were on sale and they won't eat em. Weird.
Haven't been on in a while. We now have 15 exceptionally healthy and productive chickens. We're getting about 8-12 eggs a day! The only difference I noticed when I switched to a manufactured chick starter (once it finally arrived!) was they quieted down a lot. They peeped like crazy when...

Thanks for the links. There's some good info. A lot of it expands on the maximum allowances of certain things in their feed and the possible adverse effects of too much inclusion in a home mix. So basically, the more options they have and right amount of protein equals good production. I...
Yup, just double the herring to 4 parts changes the breakdown 41.29% fat 37.96% carb and 20.75% protein. Unfortunately, it jumps the fat content a bunch too. It's good healthy fat. Mostly unsaturated, high in omegas.
So both the kelp and the berries, I'm harvesting wild so there is really no consistency as I don't have gas chromatograph to find breakdown of their parts (I'm just being silly). I could look online at the different species I'm feeding them and get a general idea about the vitamin and mineral...
Hey. Im a new member. Just got my first chickens since I was a kid. Been doing a bit of research here and other sites around the Internet. I live in VERY rural AK so finding feed can be incredibly difficult. Here's what I've put together for their starter. Just looking for some thoughts as...
