Got this chicken at a poultry auction and have no idea what it is.

I have seen the behavior you're talking about in my BBS Ameracaunas. The roosters can be pretty timid and even picked on for up to their first year. My most recent guys were 13 months before I even heard an attempt at a crow. On the plus side, if that guy is bred to any of your other hens...

    First Java Breeding Project

Thanks for the feedback! Looks like I'll be waiting until March 3rd before I start collecting hatching eggs.

What To Do With Menacing Rooster?

Also Blonde looks a little too much like a hen which may explain the filling out and less aggressive behavior. Why do you think Blonde is a roo? If Blonde is a hen you may only need to ax the roo causing the problems.

What To Do With Menacing Rooster?

Oh man post it! I'm always looking for good rooster recipes. We turn our extras into chicken brats. Soak them in beer and throw them on the grill! As far as the rooster situation goes I would dispatch two of them. Unless you're doing targeted breeding experiments I'd just keep the nicest of...

    First Java Breeding Project

I've had chickens for about 5 years now and have decided to get serious about a breed. I have chosen black Javas and have found it difficult to locate a readily available supply of hatching eggs or chicks so I'm hatching my own (saves money too ) What I was wondering is in the main coop there is...

Looks like a pullet to me

    Golden comet gender

We cross leghorns to RIRs and our chickens look just like this. The rounded tail in your upper pic looks very henlike. Unfortunately you're right in assuming the "pointy" feathered guys are probably roos.

    Pullet or Roo?

Looks cocky to me. The comb and wattles aside those tail feathers look very rooster like.

I think I got scammed and robbed :(

Oh man sorry to hear! Unfortunately I've learned the hard way that reputation is everything, if the person you're getting something from is a known crook, even if it's a great deal, it won't be worth it in the end. In our house we make sausage out of our roosters so that's an alternative too...

Using Poultry Netting in Hard Clay

Thanks for the reply! Ya I talked to someone locally who uses rebar and plastic construction fencing. As predetors aren't really an issue with my area I'm thinking I'll try that and see how it works.

Using Poultry Netting in Hard Clay

Does anyone on here have experience using electric poultry netting to rotate chickens in the southwest? We're located in SE AZ and I'd love to start rotating to help reduce feed costs and utilize chicken power to improve my soil. I want to consider doing this as the fence isn't too pricey but...

    CHICKENS NOT LAYING!!!!!

As I was typing I began to think about that. My rooster looks scraggly, that should have been my first sign. When I get home I'm going to take a closer look at them... Generally though I've never seen them start this early in AZ, October is usually when we see it here.

    Odd Hen Out

Sounds like submissive behavior to me. We see this a lot in our hens right about the time they reach breeding age. She just recognizes you as the boss!

    CHICKENS NOT LAYING!!!!!

Great variable I didn't include. All hens are in their first or second year of laying. All hens were checked in June for laying and any that were not laying within 72 hours were culled. So I know all the ones in the coop were laying at least an egg every 72 hours and it's been about one-two...

    CHICKENS NOT LAYING!!!!!

I recently cleaned out my coop and re-arranged nest boxes, also here in South East AZ we have been experiencing heavy monsoon rains over the last week. That said m,y ladies have gone from laying approximately 12-14 eggs a day to roughly 2-4 eggs per day. I have not decreased feed and they...

    Incubator Help!!!!

So i think I found the issue. I placed another therm in the bator to check the temp and it turns out it's running about 2.5 deg F lower than it has on the temp regulator. These low temps correspond to the effects listed on your troubleshooting links, that i have been experiencing. The price of...

    Incubator Help!!!!

Thank you so much for the reply Yes, I absolutely wait usually about 24 days before i start tossing eggs but I have yet to do a real eggtopsy (as stated above). I have a hatch in there today that is at day 22, so in a couple days i'll check those eggs. The incubator is force air and I honestly...

    Incubator Help!!!!

Hey all, I recently purchased a Brinsea Mini-Advanced bator and was super impressed with the ease of use and performance. My hatch rates were great and I was happy. In response I decided to add a second to my set up. Unfortunately I have had no successful hatches in this bator! I have candled...

    Barred Rock or Cuckoo Maran?

The leg color is similar to hatchery quality BRs, while they are not standard with slate legs I don't think... The barring is the big thing that makes me think Maran. BRs usually have that nice clean barring while the cuckoo barring is definitely messier.
  20. SAZUGT

    Legbar or not?

All points tell me it's an easter egger or other mix. Because of their mixed heritage these girls can be really productive as they tend to have less recessive traits than pure bred hens.
