Update…12 Chicks hatched out of 16 eggs! Cute little things. I was able to move them tonight and Momma and Chicks are happy, happy happy. And I feel better knowing they are safe and warm! tHe other 4 eggs were not fertilized. Thanks for all the help. She ended up doing quite well in the trough...
OK…So I will leave her there for a couple of days and move her and the chicks to the brooder pen at that time. We will keep our eye out for other hens making trouble. I am sure my kids will be living out in the barn the next few days anyways!
When should I let the hen out to the flock?
If I moved them, I would move them to a little room in the barn where we use to keep bottle calves when it was our main calving barn. We have a brooder pen in there. It is warm and the others cannot get to them.
She is basically in a trough, along the barn wall, where a few hens like to lay. If we move her now and her eggs, will she continue to sit on them in a new spot?
Ok we went back out and there are five little chicks and they are so cute!!food and water are ready and momma is keeping them warm. There are about ten more eggs to hatch and we will wait three more days until we move her and the chicks to the brooder. I think this is the best way to do this...
I am very new at this. We have a hen that went broody and the chicks are starting to hatch. We can hear chicks peeping and we can't see anything. we let her stay in her nesting spot. It is totally inclosed, but other hens have access to it too. It is about 50 degrees in the barn if not colder...
