Cooking advice for 6 month old roosters

We harvested chickens for the first time this weekend. I now have 5 chilling in the fridge. One was harvested Friday morning & I plan to roast him today. Should I just roast him like a regular supermarket chicken, or should I do anything different? They are pastured chickens & most are...

Top rooster has been kicked out by new roosters

I have 2 roosters that are 18 months that have coexisted peacefully in the flock since they were raised together as chicks. Back in September I had a broody hatch out 5 more boys. They grew up together with the adult flock in the same coop and yard from day 1. Over the past few days, the...

Where can I buy a stainless steel waterer?

Anyone know where I can buy a stainless steel chicken waterer? I have galvanized right now but worry about metals leaching into the water, plus after just one year of use they are looking pretty ugly inside. I'd like 3-gallon or 5-gallon sizes.

I think an owl is eating my chickens...

I've lost two hens over the past week. Heads picked clean except for combs, breast feathers plucked & meat eaten down to the rib bones. I'm almost certain it's an owl because I saw one a few nights ago on a post in my vineyard. The chickens are in a pasture surrounded by a 6 foot fence...

A few Chickens no longer going to coop at night.

All of my chickens have always gone to roost in the coop at night. But the last 2 nights, 3 hens have tried to roost up against the house. The first night they were all trying to squeeze up agains the door. It was still fairly light outside, so I cracked the door open in an attempt to scare them...

Mixes of Dominique, Delaware, & Welsummer

My broody Delaware hatched out 9 eggs last week. 3 eggs were from Welsummer hens. I'm pretty sure the other 6 were from Dominique hens, but there's a tiny remote possibility that the Delaware hen had an egg in there. (I only have one Delaware hen & she started trying to brood a few days before I...

    Can I feed expired flour?

I found an unopened bag of organic whole wheat flour in my pantry that expired a year ago. Is it safe to feed this to my week-old chicks?

Help! Injured 1-2 day old chick

My rooster pecked several times at one of the chicks. I think he actually picked it up and dropped it. Now it can't walk!!! One of its legs doesn't work. I think it's injured at the hip but I can't tell. I'm so upset and don't know what to do :-(

Giving eggs to broody hen question

I have a broody hen again (her first time, my second). Can I put eggs under her that were laid yesterday and the day before? They've been sitting at room temperature. Also, how many eggs should I give her? She's a Delaware. Thanks!

Eggs started hatching under broody. Now what?

I have a Welsummer sitting on 4 eggs. Monday was day 20, and I was away from home all day. I went out Tuesday morning, day 21, and found a tiny black head peaking out from underneath mama hen's feathers!!!! I haven't seen any others yet. I'm afraid to move her to check in case others are trying...

Adding 8 week olds to adult flock

I have a flock of 8-month old chickens: 2 roosters and 8 hens. I have 16 five and a half week old chicks. The flock has an open coop with 24/7 access to a fenced pasture of a little less than an acre. A week ago we moved the chicks into a grow-out coop inside the fenced pasture. The two groups...

Can I stop using heat lamp? (photo included)

4 weeks and 1 day old. The lows are in the mid 60s. Do you think I can stop providing heat? The highs have been in the mid to upper 80s, so since they were a few days old I've only been turning on the heat lamps at night. They are currently in my pole barn. I have 16 of them and they're going...

Waiting for the mail is stressful!

This is my second time ordering chicks, and I've decided the most stressful part of raising chickens is waiting for the mail! I have 15 Dominique pullets coming from Cackle. I received shipping notification from Cackle yesterday mid-day. USPS tracking shows they went from Lebanon to Springfield...

    Genetic diversity

I received my first chicks from Meyer back in October 2013, and the ones that made it are doing great now. I have 2 Dominique roosters and 4 hens, plus a few other breeds. I'd like to breed my Dominiques, and am getting ready to order more pullets. My question is, am I likely to have enough...

Anyone order from The Poultry Hatchery?

I'm wanting to order from www.thepoultryhatchery.com , but I'm having trouble finding reviews. I'm going to be ordering Dominiques, but would love to hear about anyone's purchases from there. Thanks!

Can I feed chick starter to pullets that just started laying?

I am using only organic feed for my flock, which has to be ordered and delivered only once a month. (I could order it from other places right now, but shipping makes it crazy expensive.) A bag of layer feed arrived Monday and was busted completely open on the delivery truck, all wasted! I...

Can I take the first egg, or should I leave it?

Got our first egg yesterday, and a second today!! They are in two separate nest boxes. Can I take them out right away? Or should I leave them for a few days? Just wondering if taking them right away would discourage the hens from laying in the boxes.

    First egg today!!!!!!

First egg from my first chickens!!!!! 99% sure it was a Dominique that layed it based on recent behaviors. We heard the classic egg song mid-day yesterday coming from a nest box. Checked later on but there was no egg, and again at dark, no egg. Went out this morning and found this!!!!

    Chickens out in the rain

My chickens are ranging in the yard and it's raining and sleeting outside. Is this normal? They voluntarily came out of their coop to do it. I'm worried they may get sick because it's cold outside and they are getting all wet!
