I have had problems with frost bite so, I prefer pea or rose combchickens!
We have Brahmas, EE & Ameraucanas they have had no problems!
4x8 is a good size for 6!
I know in western PA my chickens are closed in for at least 3 month in winter!

I guess you could start with
finding the chicken for your climate!
How many eggs do you want for your self?
do you want a few extra to give as presents?
do you want nice mix of colors?
do you want to sell eggs? (for eating or hatching)
here is a chart that might help (they give the amount...
I find it amazing that my Large Fowl BR lays an egg 2.1oz (who is quite big) & my bantam Cochin (who is maybe 1/4 her size) lays an egg 1.5oz!
So, I am interested in finding what Bantam lays the larger egg (being B.Cochins are suppose to be small compared to other Bantams)
Chickens are very social I would suggest at least 3 in the event something happens to 1!
I would suggest a tractor you could move to certain areas maybe the kids don't play in (or just move around the edge of property/yard) so they could get fresh grass!

Thanks for sharing!
Do you keep your Spitzhaubens in a run? if so how do they do?
I was interested in these but read
"not very tolerant of close confinement"
in Henderson chart
I am thinking of getting some eggs from Gabbard Farms!
Wondering if anyone else has gotton eggs from them?
if so,
what breed did you get?
how many eggs did you get?
&
how many eggs hatched ?
Thank You in advance!
Bantams do have a better egg to feed ratio, they are great in small spaces!
My large Fowl are sweet also they come running when you open the door, some will sit in your lap but, my bantams sit longer cuddle up & go to sleep in my lap.
2 questions
I am looking to add to flock!
1) What is a economical chicken (good feed to egg ratio) & not flighty!
2) I like the look of the Silver Spangled Appenzeller but, I have read they don't do well in confinement. Was wondering if anyone has experience with temperament & confining?
In my experience Plymouth Rocks & Rhode Island Reds!
Here is a site that breaks down size of large Fowl & Bantams! Go to Breed info in Purple Box!
