Breeding for PERSONALITY. AKA Hello SWEET ROO!

Linda, Your experience with RIR's was quite unlike ours. We have second and third generation that are just some of sweetest animals we have. "Junior",(he is actually huge), one of our roosters is quite approachable, easily picked-up, and will set in your lap for a short amount of time. When out...

    Egg killer

On another thread at this site, I have read that adding oyster shell to their food is a bad idea. Do not remember why. Just make sure that it is always available to them. They will eat as much as they need.

    What predator is this? Footprints

You will probably need to "take out' the dog. Once they find your chickens, there is a very good chance it'll be back. Had a friend that lost his whole flock to a dog, his own! Didn't eat them. Pretty much just ran them to death. Hopefully your bird will get it back together after a day or so...

Floor Material for Small Coop and Run

Bark can be slow to decompose, that is why it makes a wonderful mulch. The large pieces seem to take almost forever. One of the "rules" for successful composting is to mix brown and green equally or leaning towards green. The brown would be the wood shavings, straw, etc. Green is stuff like...

Floor Material for Small Coop and Run

Dirt is good. If it gets muddy after a rain storm, you can throw down some pine shavings, even that from inside the coup. Rake it up every once in a while and toss it in the compost pile. Cheap and easy and one less thing to buy. After years of drought, we got a big rainstorm, and the pine...

What to do with this litter?

I have been told meal worms are not good for baby chicks. Too much calcium. We start our chicks out on paper towels. old bath towels, etc. Replace them every couple of days and throw the dirty ones in the washer after shaking them out.

Best type of roost? Weigh in with your design opinion.

2 X 2, 2 X 4, 2 X whatever. The flat surface is more stable and in cold weather their feet have better cover. I also think all on the same level. The birds are egotistical enough as is, no sense in giving one more of a superiority complex than they have already. Just my two cents worth.

    Soft Water Okay?

From a Shur-Gain Nutrifax newsleter: "Poultry are also extremely sensitive to excess sodium, so it is not recommended to use water softeners." For whatever it is worth, there seems to be quite a lot of conflicting information about water quality for birds. Most of it is focused on large...

    chicken coop heater pictures

Because of the possibility of fire in the coop, I think that it would be a HUGE mistake to buy cheap crap from a store such as wal-mart. If you feel that maybe saving a few bucks is worth risking your birds, good luck.
