I'm not too far from you. We will be on vacay the third week of March. If you want I could watch your chicks along with mine (I will be getting some after vacay) and you can pick them up after you return.

Townline hatchery is in Zealand and they have a minimum order of 25 when they ship chicks. However, I have contacted them and asked about local pickup of smaller orders. They were willing to work with me, so if they aren't too far from you give them a call and ask.

It sounded good. I loved the part where you said, well that was a parakeet that you heard.

    Brooder heat source

It would seem that the ecoglows are not much more than one of these with some feet to raise it off of the floor of the brooder. You pay quite a premium for some feet.

You don't like hanging with the trolls? My in laws live across the bay on the stonington peninsula. I've been discussing chickens with them and they seem interested in starting to raise chickens as well. Would you mind if I somehow get them in touch with you when they get back from Florida in...

    Brooder heat source

For you ecoglow users, do you (during the day) provide a separate light source, or should you if brooding in a darker area like a garage or basement? I would imagine that the same would go for using a ceramic heating element in a brooding lamp, right? What about using a heating pad under the...

    Brooder heat source

I have looked through several pages in this forum now but have yet to find the definitive heat source thread, so hopefully some of you experienced brooders will voice your opinion. I will be brooding chicks this spring and wanted to know, real world, if some of these heat sources are better...

The way I read this is to say I could not expand any further or could not put in new if I do not already have chickens or "livestock". I am in a neighborhood so am certainly zoned residential, but what you are saying is that if this goes through I will lose any right that I currently have for...

This is your motivation and your argument. Putting a limit on the small backyard farmer cuts choice out of the market. We live in a capitalistic society, so they should just let the market take care of what they see as a problem (small farms). If people continue to run backyard farms, then the...

Those funny laws... Gotta wonder what lead to their creation!

This one actually makes perfect sense since Google and several car manufacturers are testing fully automated/driverless cars. I am sure michigan has a similar law since I believe those same manufacturers are doing cold weather testing of said systems here.

I don't believe the extra $50 software is needed unless you want to integrate multiple cameras, receive text message alerts, or compress the video file sizes so that they take up less space on your PC.

Even better than a game camera would be something like a wireless internet connected camera with night vision, like this like this it would allow you to view chicks from any device with internet access, even while traveling. At just $65 I plan to have one in my coop once I'm done building it.

WEIRD or ODD Eggs pics!!!! :)

Since I am new to this chicken raising thing, this may seem like a dumb question to you more seasoned folks. How do you know which chickens laid what eggs? Many of you seem to know which one have you which eggs. Do you all have wireless cameras mounted in your coops?

Sorry for the sensationalist title, but I wanted people to read it and get back to me. :D

    CANABALISM: feeding chickens eggshells

So I am brand new to this whole chicken raising thing, so excuse me if I sound crazy for asking. Is it really a good idea to be feeding chickens egg shells, or worse yet IMO scrambled eggs? I have read that you want to break the shell down into small pieces so that it is unrecognizable, but...

Would it really effect a backyard chicken coop? I skimmed through the proposed changes and it looks like it effects any facility over 50 animals.

Sillychicken, you must not be too far away from me. I saw the same ad and was thinking of using four of those to make my coop. From the other pictures in the ad it looks like they have some with sides that don't have those slits. However the bottom is still a pallet and would need a piece of...

    Newbie questions from Michigan

Thanks for all of the replies. I am thinking about starting with a pair of each breed (Road Island Red, Barred Plymouth Rock, & Golden Comet (Sex Link). Based on plans that I have seen in a number of places, I believe I will be building a coop that is elevated off of the ground by about 2...
