    Sultan Hen

I have cancer and cannot spend the time I used to with Miss Minnie Pearl, that "bottom rung of the pecking order" odd little hen in my flock of banties. My husband says we should find a new home for her. Our rooster picks on her and she has never been mated, they treat her like she's not even a...

Do hawks kill but leave chicken bodies uneaten?

Our silkie hen was killed but only half eaten. Looks like she was picked apart from above, not bitten or gnawed, dry feathers all around her carcass. Sadly only the skyward half of her purple carcass was picked away and we grieve the terrible waste of her beautiful life. Do hawks routinely...

Eddie Vedder the Northern Illinois mixed bantam splash cockerel

June 30 Mr. Eddie Vedder will be a one year old rooster. His dad is a blue Silkie, his mom is either red EE or mixed Silkie/black rosecomb. He is a good pet bird. He is cold hardy. He is an excellent rooster for hens, takes good care of his ladies, feeds them, beds them down to lay eggs, puts...

How to Catch a Chicken video

This video was my first attempt at sending encouragement to a coworker who claimed she was worn out by trying to get her sisters' chickens into their coop for the night. At my house it is ridiculously easy to call a chicken and have a little chat. Am I the only one with chickens who know...

    black swampy poop

Collecting my chicken poop in my handy pooper scooper, then I run across this one. We have a Silkie hen who goes through runny black poop once or twice a year, she is 4 years old. She goes broody a lot. This is probably hers, its one of those big giant broody hen poops they save up for when...

    What color is this?

The splash is no longer pure white. He has a golden glow about him. This is one day after a bath and blow dry. The golden hue is either very mutt-ly, or OMG special! His name was Pearl, because he used to irridesce purply blue like a pearl or white opal. But he became a lttle boy and we...

Why Bantams work in urban backyards?!

Our chickens came to us by accident, so we didn't choose bantams. They have, however, inspired many others around us to delve into chicken keeping, as our little flock appears to be such fun! Why do these bantams work so well here? Lots of people around here are trying chickens, BUT they seem...

    Airsoft pellets, blocked crop

LittleKitty has a big squishy blocked crop. Our kind bird vet spent a day lavage-ing and suctioning the goo out. We did 7 days of oral baytril then have been squirting nystatin down her throat (she likes this much better than the baytril) because the culture of her crop goo grew out e.coli and...

Beaker was a funky little chicken......

Now Beaker's looking like a fine little rooster! He's a nice little guy. He's kind of prissy and careful about what get's on him and what can touch him, but he's nice. A few months ago he looked like this: Hatched on June 30 2011. He's 8 months old! thanks for looking!

    RN's? Nurses?

Since keeping chickens is our "real" life, I thought I'd start a new thread for RN-chicken-keeping-people. I am a med/surg/ACLS/NIH Stroke RN. After 18 years, finally working a day shift full time hospital job. After work today, I saw my reflection in my rearview mirror eating leftover...

Calling all BUNNY keepers! Treat question?!

Mr Bunny is delighted to freerange our entire universe at all times. He is funny, and fun. Yesterday he pulled an ornament made by a gradeschooler off the tree and asked if he could eat it, he liked it a lot, but our kid said "its made of glue and cinnamon and sawdust" (made last year). So we...

Poll: What Diseases do Chickens Spread?

Today at Lowe's DH picked up a goat magazine by the check-out counter, joking that he always wanted a goat or llama... The clerk says, "I don't think you can have goats around here. I know people are getting chickens, but they spread diseases." This comes up once in a while, that people will...

    Noisy chickens video for NEWBIES!

My holiday gift to you. If you're wondering "How noisy can chickens be?" here is a nice short video of my rooster warning his hens to go for cover as a fast hawk just flew by. It doesn't happen often, but when it does, its noisy!
