Am i right in saying that domestic cats are very rarely considered predators for Bantams.
Its just, a few months ago i asked a similar question on here and i was told cats should pose no threat especially since i have 2 ducks and a cockerel but i've got a very playfull kitten that insists on...
Hello, i have a Silver Laced Wyandotte Bantam cockerel with 2 silkie bantams and a brown cross breed.
He's coming to the age now where he's crowing, strutting about and chasing the girls about.
I was wondering if it was a silly idea to let them breed? and what the chicks would turn out like if...
I got told that if u put up a fence but leave it unstable enough to wobble but not enough to fall over the fox cant grip and has trouble getting over... but yeah, they do climb.
Its still legal in the UK to shoot foxes providing u have a gun lisence which i dont unfortunatly.. i'm asking about tho.
As for poisons, its illegal here to poison them.. which to me seems unfair but i can understand because theres alot of rabbits etc that are only just getting into the swing...
I live in quite a rural location and i've had quails and chickens in the garden for the last year or so without any being picked off by anything.
The only really dangerous predator in our area is the fox and unfortunatly in the last 2 months the vixens had a few cubs and they've started causing...
Well we've had a talk tonight and it seems we'll be getting a kitten, probably this weekend. hopefully that way it'll be easier to train to leave the birds well alone (i have a kakariki and cockatiel too).
thanks for all the replies and stories, much appreciated.. and interesting!!..
thanks alot
thanks for your reply.. i think once my cockerels fully grown we'll get the cat and i'll supervise them for the 1st few days and hopefully it'll all be dandy..
I've got 4 Bantams running free range around my garden and the field surrounding and other than the odd fox and a neighbours cat they havent really had any problems. ones a young silver laced bantam cockerel (about 10 weeks) and he's already starting to toughen up and take charge of the others...
I've got a hen bird and 7 chicks in together. i think 3 are pullets and 4 are cockerels..
i just went outside cus u heard alot of noise and 2 of the cocks are fighting and theres blood on one of them.. they're only 8 weeks old and i was told they wouldent fight for a few weeks yet..
anyway, i...
All my chicks seem to be squring up to each other and theres only 2 that seem to be showing physical signs of being cockerals.
is this normal? or does this mean they're all bloody cockerals?
Hello, I have a quick question about integrating my 6 week old chick with the adult chickens.
basically since the chick was a week old its been in a small broody ark within the chickens run. so they've seen him every day and grown accept him as part of the flock.. or so i thought..
I released...
Hello!!
It sounds to me like your pretty well organised. i cant think of anything else you'd need . in regards to grit, it isent essential until you start to feed the chicks anything other than chick crumb. they need grit to help them digest greens or treats and whatnot... i mixed a small...
Is 8 weeks old enough to release the chick with the other birds with its mother or should i hang on a little while longer?
Its fully feathered and in good health.
Ermm.. from my experiance (which isent as vast as most on here) a little pecking towards the chicks now and again is normal. mine have done it before and the chicks are fine.
As for her not thinking they are her chicks, i think she knows exactly what shes doing.
mine diddent move for 2 or 3...
Because i keep getting differing views..
I only have one so i cant compare and theres a very small red comb appearing very slowly..
No spurs on his/her leg either.. or loud or unusual chirping.
any experianced brains out there?
We have buzzards and sparrowhawks in my area but buzzards only eat carrion and sparrow hawks are pretty small and would pose no danger to the bigger full grown birds.
no possums, weasels or racoons either... the only snakes are grass snakes that are really small or adders which are bigger but...
Mine are pets..
They're spoilt regularly with strawberrys and bread and they have free roam of the garden and house if they wish..
They're my little beauties!
I wont be eating them thats for sure. i highly recommend chickens as pets!
